Job Description

This role is for a Senior Editorial Assistant within Springer Nature's Springer Journals publishing team, focusing on high-profile biomedical journals, specifically the British Dental Journal portfolio. The assistant will manage manuscript processing, peer review, copyediting, and author correspondence. Key responsibilities also include supporting social media marketing, tracking research integrity cases, generating performance reports, and assisting with administrative and editorial projects to ensure the growth and quality of the journal portfolio.
Good To Have:
  • An interest in dentistry and related disciplines
  • Experience of using a peer review management system such as eJP or Editorial Manager
  • Experience in journals publishing
  • Experience of managing a social media account
  • Knowledge of science, technical, and medical (STM) publishing, including usage, citation metrics, developments in the market, and commissioning strategies
  • Demonstrable experience of office administration

About the Role

We have a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a passion for scientific advancement to develop their publishing career and work alongside some of the best researchers in this field.

As Senior Editorial Assistant, you would be responsible for supporting a defined list of journals within the Biomedicine group, working as part of the British Dental Journal portfolio team, including the flagship BDJ and fully open access BDJ Open. In this role you will contribute to the growth and quality of the BDJ Portfolio by operating journal peer review and copyediting processes, supporting editorial and publishing projects, web processes, and social media marketing and by providing efficient administrative support.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the receipt and processing of journal manuscripts to British Dental Journal, BDJ Open and Evidence-Based Dentistry, including all manuscript correspondence, peer review administration tasks and author decision letters.
  • Copyedit articles for spelling, sense, grammar and conformity to house style, and apply the BDJ journal formatting.
  • Manage journal inboxes efficiently and respond to author queries to ensure author satisfaction in a timely fashion.
  • Support issue sign off as required, including adding author information to accepted articles using the relevant tools, and assisting in QC checks.
  • Assist with the running of the BDJ Portfolio Social Media accounts, writing and scheduling regular tweets/posts highlighting content in BDJ Portfolio and adhering to best practice.
  • Track research integrity cases for British Dental Journal, BDJ Open and Evidence-Based Dentistry, using Springer Nature best practice guidelines.
  • Generate performance reports as necessary, and present the data at relevant meetings, including quarterly business meetings.
  • Assist the Marketing Manager with creating content for the BDJ Portfolio socials and/or journal websites as required.
  • Take on administrative tasks and editorial tasks, and provide support for publishing projects for BDJ Portfolio as and when they arise.
  • Take on writing projects for the BDJ Portfolio as required.
  • Make updates to the journal websites as required.
  • Take the minutes at BDJ Portfolio meetings as required.

Experience, skills and qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to bachelor’s degree level
  • Excellent English language, including accurate spelling and grammar, and editing skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Excellent personal organisation skills, with the ability to manage time and projects successfully to meet frequent deadlines, achieve agreed goals, and deal with a wide variety of tasks, prioritising appropriately.
