About the job

Who is SkyBox Labs?

Recognized as one of BC's Top Employers (2024), SkyBox Labs is a game development studio that works on some of the world’s most iconic games. The studio is currently co-developing Halo Infinite, working on projects in the Minecraft universe, supporting the dev team at Bungie on Destiny, supporting development of Fallout 76, and working on original IP. As one of Canada’s fastest-growing game studios, since our inception in 2011, SkyBox Labs has evolved from a group of 8 people to a team of over 270+ Engineers, Artists, Animators, Designers, Producers, and more! Join us in our Burnaby studio, or have the opportunity to work remotely within Canada for certain designated projects.

Interested? Let’s talk about what we’re hiring for:

We're looking for an experienced Senior Lighting Artist to join in the pre-production stage of a AAA Original IP project. As one of the first Lighting Artists on the project, your expertise will be instrumental in helping shape the visuals of the game and ensure it stands out with stunning, top-tier graphics, and realistic lighting. This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with a talented team and make a significant impact from the early stages on an exciting new project.

A snapshot of your role:

    • Light scenes, objects, and environments within the game to a high level of quality, ensuring alignment with the artistic goals of the project
    • Collaborate closely with Tech Art and Graphics Engineering to establish the lighting pipeline, workflows, and visual benchmarks
    • Participate as a key stakeholder in determining which feature sets to use to best serve the project
    • Develop strategies on how to leverage UE5 to the fullest
    • Determine where to invest on improving lighting beyond UE5

Sound like you? This is what we're looking for:

    • 7+ years working professionally as a Lighting Artist in game development or related field
    • Professional work experience in AA or AAA games for console or PC
    • Real-time game engine experience and an understanding of how to navigate and leverage its many features
    • Strong understanding of art fundamentals including composition and colour theory
    • Excellent artistic eye for lighting in high-quality realistic environments
    • Problem solver who is comfortable collaborating with other disciplines to drive decisions in the lighting space
    • Unafraid to explore and use new technology, researching and delivering solutions that best suit the team
    • Ability to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision
    • Honed communication skills with the ability to provide and accept feedback
    • Nice-to-haves:
    • Experience with Unreal, ideally Unreal 5
    • Familiar with, or experience working in the pre-production phase of a project
    • Experience shipping AA or AAA video games
    • A passion for video games and creating immersive experiences!

Please note, only those who submit a portfolio of applicable lighting assets will be considered for the role.

Our commitment to you:

SkyBox Labs is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, committed to developing and maintaining a diverse workforce. You’ll join a collaborative, inclusive culture. One where we succeed together – across the desk and around Canada. Where like-minded people work naturally together to achieve great things (and games!).

Only candidates who reside in Canada or are willing to relocate will be considered for this role. Additionally, although we appreciate all interest, only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
