Job Description
Wolters Kluwer Tax and Accounting division offers AI infused solutions that enable professionals in tax and accounting firms of all sizes to grow, manage, and protect their business and their clients’ businesses.
As a Senior Scrum Master with responsibilities of a Release Train Engineer, you will act as a servant leader at both team and program levels. In this dual capacity, you will coach and guide teams to deliver value using the approach that best fits their context—whether through PI Planning for coordinated planning cycles or Kanban for flow-based delivery—without rigidly adhering to a single framework. Your expertise will be key in selecting and applying the right Agile practices for each situation, fostering continuous improvement, and ensuring seamless alignment between team execution and strategic objectives.
In this role you will report to the Associate Director, Product Software Engineering and work a hybrid schedule (2 days in office, 3 days remote).
Responsibilities:
Team-Level (Scrum Master / Flow Coach)
- Facilitate team ceremonies appropriate to their workflow model—Scrum events for sprint-based teams and Kanban cadences (replenishment, delivery planning, service delivery reviews) for flow-based teams
- Coach teams on selecting and optimizing the right agile approach based on work type, whether time-boxed iterations or continuous flow
- Partner with Product Owners to maintain healthy backlogs with appropriate refinement and prioritization strategies for both Scrum and Kanban contexts
- Implement and manage Kanban systems including WIP limits, pull policies, classes of service, and explicit workflow policies
- Identify and remove team-level impediments; manage blockers and aging work items to maintain healthy flow
- Track and communicate relevant metrics—velocity and burndown for Scrum teams, throughput, cycle time, and flow efficiency for Kanban teams
Program-Level (Release Train Engineer)
- Facilitate agile release train (ART) events including PI Planning (Program Increment Planning), System Demos, Inspect & Adapt workshops, and ART Sync meetings
- Integrate Kanban teams into PI Planning cadences, ensuring their capacity and commitments align with program objectives while respecting continuous flow principles
- Manage cross-team dependencies, risks, and impediments, drive resolution at the program level regardless of team methodology
- Optimize end-to-end flow of value using program-level metrics such as lead time distribution, flow load, and predictability
- Collaborate with Product Management, System Architects, and Business Owners to align priorities across the program increment
- Coordinate with other Scrum Masters, Flow Coaches, and RTEs across the portfolio to resolve systemic blockers
- Communicate ART progress, risks, and health to leadership using appropriate visualizations and forecasting techniques
Continuous Improvement & Coaching
- Champion a culture of relentless improvement through retrospectives, flow reviews, and experimentation
- Guide teams in selecting appropriate practices: Scrum for complex work requiring frequent inspection and adaptation, Kanban for operational work, maintenance, or unpredictable demand
- Mentor teams on Lean principles including limiting work in progress, managing flow, and making process policies explicit
- Support transitions between methodologies as team or work contexts evolve
- Drive adoption of Agile tooling best practices across both Scrum and Kanban implementations
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in Agile environments with hands-on experience coaching both Scrum and Kanban teams
- 2+ years of experience coordinating at the program level (RTE, Agile Program Manager, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated experience integrating flow-based teams into PI Planning and SAFe constructs
- Strong understanding of Lean-Agile principles, Scrum, Kanban Method, and scaling frameworks
- Proficiency with Agile tooling such as Jira, Azure DevOps, or Rally, including Kanban board configuration and flow metrics
- Experience supporting distributed or hybrid teams across multiple time zones
- Excellent facilitation, coaching, conflict resolution, and communication skills
Preferred:
- Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Professional Scrum Master (PSM), or SAFe Scrum Master (SSM)
- SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) or SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) certification
- Kanban Management Professional (KMP), Team Kanban Practitioner (TKP), or Kanban System Design (KSD) certification
- Experience with probabilistic forecasting techniques (Monte Carlo simulations, flow-based estimation)
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software delivery
- Background in software engineering or technical product development
Skills:
- A pragmatic mindset that applies the right methodology to the right context rather than dogmatic adherence to a single framework
- Servant-leader approach with genuine passion for helping teams succeed
- Ability to balance cadence-based planning with continuous flow optimization
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and driving clarity in complex, multi-methodology environments
- Strong relationship-building skills across all levels of the organization
- Data-driven approach to improvement using flow metrics and forecasting
