Job Summary
Quest Global is seeking a Test & Commissioning Engineer for Generator Control and Protection Systems. This role involves testing and commissioning electrical equipment for thermal power plants, including generator exciters, static frequency converters, control panels, protection relays, and auto synchronizers. The engineer will perform site tests before and after gas turbine start-up, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with grid standards. The position is based in Japan with overseas assignments, primarily in the United States, supporting the growing demand for skilled Test Field Advisors.
Must Have
- Perform testing of generator-related panels and circuits at site
- Conduct interface checks between panels
- Commission generators and associated systems
- Execute site tests before and after GT (Gas Turbine) start-up
- Minimum 5 years in testing and commissioning electrical systems for thermal power plants
- Hands-on experience with generator control systems, excitation systems, and protection relays
- Strong understanding of generator main circuit, synchronization, and interlock logic
- Experience in site testing procedures including power receiving, loop checks, interlock, phase relation, load rejection, and performance tests
- Familiarity with grid compliance standards (e.g., NERC, IEEE)
Good to Have
- Commissioning of combined cycle power plants
- Knowledge of Static Frequency Converter (SFC) operation and troubleshooting
- Experience with SCADA/DCS systems integration
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and logic drawings
- Previous overseas commissioning experience
- English communication skills for technical discussions and reporting
- Ability to work in multicultural teams and adapt to overseas site conditions
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting under time constraints

Background: Customer factory is specializing in engineering and manufacturing electrical equipment for thermal power plants, including combustion turbines and combined cycle power plants. With the rapid increase in overseas projects—especially in the U.S. due to data center construction—we are expanding our team to address the growing demand for skilled Test Field Advisors (TFA).
Work Scope: You will be responsible for testing and commissioning electrical equipment related to generator control and protection systems at thermal power plant sites.
Equipment Includes:
- Generator Exciters
- Static Frequency Converters (SFC)
- Generator Control Panels
- Protection Relays for Generator/Transformer
- Auto Synchronizers
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform testing of generator-related panels and circuits at site
- Conduct interface checks between panels
- Commission generators and associated systems
- Execute site tests before and after GT (Gas Turbine) start-up
Typical Site Activities:
- Before GT Start:
- Power receiving
- Panel testing within scope
- Loop checks with external panels
- Interlock and phase relation tests
- After GT Start:
- No-load and on-load tests (50%, 75%, 100%)
- Load rejection tests
- Performance tests
- Special tests required by grid operators (e.g., NERC compliance)
Required Skills & Experience:
Technical Experience:
- Minimum 5 years in testing and commissioning electrical systems for thermal power plants.
- Hands-on experience with generator control systems, excitation systems, and protection relays
- Strong understanding of generator main circuit, synchronization, and interlock logic
- Experience in site testing procedures, including:
- Power receiving and energization
- Loop checks and interface verification
- Interlock and phase relation tests
- Load rejection and performance tests
- Familiarity with grid compliance standards (e.g., NERC, IEEE)
Preferred Experience:
- Commissioning of combined cycle power plants
- Knowledge of Static Frequency Converter (SFC) operation and troubleshooting
- Experience with SCADA/DCS systems integration
