As a Freelance Lighting Artist, you will be crucial in enhancing the game's visual atmosphere by implementing and refining lighting across different scenes and environments. You will collaborate with art and tech teams to ensure lighting enhances gameplay and aesthetics, delivering a cohesive visual experience. Responsibilities include designing and implementing high-quality lighting setups, collaborating with art directors, utilizing Unreal Engine, experimenting with lighting techniques, and optimizing setups for performance. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a remote team.
Must have:
  • Proven experience as a Lighting Artist.
  • Proficiency in lighting and rendering in Unreal Engine.
  • Strong understanding of lighting principles.
  • Experience with real-time lighting systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills for remote teamwork.
Good to have:
  • Experience with stylized lighting approaches.
  • Familiarity with shader authoring.
  • Knowledge of compositing software.

About the Role

We are seeking a Freelance Lighting Artist to contribute to our upcoming 3D action title. In this role, you'll be instrumental in defining and enhancing the game's visual atmosphere by implementing and refining lighting across various scenes and environments. Collaborating closely with our art and tech teams, you'll ensure that lighting enhances both gameplay and aesthetics, delivering a cohesive visual experience. ​

What You’ll Do

  • Design and implement high-quality lighting setups that enhance storytelling, emotion, and atmosphere in digital environments and characters.

  • Collaborate with art directors, environment artists, and technical teams to maintain a cohesive artistic vision.

  • Utilize lighting software in Unreal Engine and manipulate light sources, shadows, and reflections.

  • Experiment with different lighting techniques, including global illumination, ray tracing, and volumetric lighting, to achieve desired visual effects.

  • Optimize lighting setups for performance, ensuring real-time lighting runs efficiently across various hardware.

  • Troubleshoot lighting issues and render artifacts, providing creative solutions while adhering to technical constraints. ​

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven experience as a Lighting Artist in the gaming industry, with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.

  • Proficiency in lighting and rendering in Unreal.

  • Strong understanding of lighting principles, including color theory, composition, and contrast.

  • Experience with real-time lighting systems and optimization techniques.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a remote team environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with stylized lighting approaches that fit a unique artistic direction.

  • Familiarity with shader authoring and post-processing techniques.

  • Knowledge of compositing software such as Adobe After Effects, Nuke, or Fusion
