Job Summary

WSP is seeking a Field Engineering Lead for the Mining sector. This role involves comprehensive project management, acting as the primary liaison between WSP and the client, and leading on-site design representation and CQA services. The lead will participate in project meetings, adapt designs based on field conditions, review and update designs, evaluate and propose modifications, and address client inquiries related to construction processes. The position requires ensuring compliance with internal quality, environmental, and safety policies.

Must Have

  • Manage construction projects, representing WSP to the client
  • Integrate field CQA and terrain engineering with office engineering
  • Act as the liaison between WSP and the client, maintaining permanent communication
  • Be the on-site contact for WSP regarding TMF construction, leading designer representation
  • Participate in execution, planning, quality control, and strategy meetings
  • Perform design adjustments in the field based on conditions or optimizations
  • Review and update designs to incorporate variations in terrain or materials
  • Evaluate and propose modifications, changes, and optimizations
  • Address client inquiries (RFI) related to the constructive process
  • Establish direct communication with the Client (no direct instructions to contractor)
  • Perform periodic complementary reviews of quality control and assurance tests
  • Comply with internal policies and procedures for Quality, Environment, and Safety
  • Civil Engineering degree or related
  • Knowledge in Quality Management and/or Project Management
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in mining sector projects (supervision, construction, management, engineering)
  • Availability to work in the field under a work regime

Good to Have

  • Experience in mining infrastructure projects (Tailings dams, processing plants, leaching pads, waste dumps, canals, conveyor belts, dikes, access roads)

Main functions of the position:

  • Perform comprehensive management of the construction project, responsible for WSP to the client, integrating field CQA and terrain engineering with office engineering, in coordination with the Program Manager.
  • Be the link between WSP and the client, maintaining permanent communication with the assigned responsible parties (John Pottie and/or Nancy Tracy) and with the Program Manager, EOR, and CQA.
  • Be WSP's On-Site point of contact regarding issues related to TMF construction, leading the designer's representation in the field, as well as Terrain Engineering and CQA services with the support of the WSP Resident Engineer.
  • Participate in execution, planning, quality control, and strategy meetings for the works associated with the different components of the TMF (in which WSP is involved as designer and/or CQA).
  • Perform design adjustments in the field during the constructive stage based on the terrain conditions found and/or optimizations that are considered applicable, providing a quick response for the benefit of shorter execution times and/or lower construction costs.
  • Carry out reviews and/or updates of associated designs in order to incorporate possible variations that could be found in the terrain conditions and/or construction materials.
  • Perform evaluations and propose modifications, changes, and/or optimizations, most of which can be implemented in the field in coordination with the Teck Quebrada Blanca team, seeking to minimize those modifications that require off-site team participation.
  • Address inquiries (RFI) generated by the Client or at the request of Teck Quebrada Blanca related to the constructive process, through management formats or Field Instructions (IDT).
  • Establish direct communication with the Client. Will not give instructions directly to the Contractor or the Site Supervisor, nor will receive instructions from them.
  • Perform periodic complementary reviews of results of different quality control and assurance tests (e.g., foundation, rockfill, plinths, injections, filters, geomembrane, etc.) with the intention of allowing identification of deviations and/or affectations to the design and construction of the works.
  • Comply with the internal policies and procedures of the Integrated Quality, Environment, and Occupational Health and Safety Management System in the activities performed, among others.

Professional background:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering and/or related careers.
  • Knowledge in Quality Management and/or Project Management or related topics.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in mining sector projects, in supervision and/or construction and/or project management and/or engineering.
  • Desirable with experience in mining infrastructure projects (Tailings dams, processing plants, leaching pads, waste dumps, canals, conveyor belts, dikes, access roads).
  • Availability to work in the field under a work regime.
