POLITICO’s Research & Analysis Division is seeking a freelance Junior Data Analyst specializing in EU Affairs. This role involves strengthening data-driven coverage of EU Affairs by transforming complex political and policy data into clear, compelling visuals for reports. The analyst will research, acquire, clean, and explore datasets, conduct descriptive analyses, and visualize findings to identify trends and communicate actionable insights to policymakers and industry experts across Europe. Candidates should have experience in data storytelling and knowledge of EU politics and policymaking.

Must Have

Freelance Junior Data Analyst (EU Affairs)

POLITICO’s Research & Analysis Division is looking fora freelance Junior Data Analyst to cover EU Affairs.

You will strengthen our data-driven coverage of EU Affairs and transform complex political and policy data into clear, compelling visuals for reports read by policymakers, industry experts, and decision-makers across Europe.

Candidates should have demonstrated experience in telling stories with data. Candidates should have knowledge of EUpolitics and policymaking

Responsibilities

  • Research, acquire, and explore datasets that illuminate key issues in policy and politics
  • Acquire primary raw, real-world data through data generation or data research; clean and explore the data to find relevant insights; conduct independent descriptive analyses, and visualize your findings in compelling graphs
  • Identify trends, their relevance, and underlying analytical stories within the data and develop clear, engaging ways to communicate them visually.
  • Produce explanatory visualizations – charts, maps, and infographics – in code to accompany our analytical reports.
  • Deliver high-quality visualizations for our written reports that translate complex issues and quantitative analyses into clear, actionable insights
  • Collaborate closely with other analysts in POLITICO’s Research & Analysis Division

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field (economics, political science, data science or related)
  • At least 1 year of experience transforming data into narrative insights – e.g., visual explainers, data essays, or report graphics
  • Understanding of EU Politics and (some of) the below policy areas; experience in French and British politics and policy making is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Working proficiency in R or Python for analysis and visualization; experience with data visualization libraries or design tools (Flourish, Datawrapper, Illustrator) a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills: able to explain what the numbers mean — and why they matter
