Lead Technical Designer - Respawn, Wisconsin

Apex Legends is looking for a Lead Technical Designer to join our Respawn Entertainment team in Madison, Wisconsin. You will collaborate with the Game Design Director to bring our game vision to life through rapid prototyping and execution. You will not only dive into the tools but also build and manage a team of technical designers. You will report into the Game Design Director.

You have a technical background and is leads by example. You will mentor other designers to help problem solve and help enhance their skills, foster a culture of innovation and excellence. Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of Tech Designers setting up a culture of career growth and mentorship.
  • Work with game designers, engineers and other creatives to develop the vision and improve compelling gameplay systems
  • Establish best practices for Tech Design
  • Align and collaborate with multiple disciplines to promote the vision of gameplay features
  • Ensure a high-quality release by bug fixing, reviewing scripts, balancing, and creating a fun gameplay experience
  • Pitch idea, provide feedback and rapid iteration with the team to find the fun and make Apex the best it can be!

Requirements:

  • 5+ years experience shipping AAA titles and leading teams in a live service environment
  • Experience with scripting languages (such as Lua, Python, JavaScript, and/or other scripting languages)
  • Experience presenting designs across multiple disciplines
  • Experience creating gameplay systems, mechanics and gamemodes
  • Experience hiring and managing a team of 4-6 creatives
  • Familiarity with the Battle Royale genre
  • Expertise in comprehending the game design process, specifically with game mechanics and design theory

Nice to have:

  • Experience with content-driven game engines (Unreal, Frostbite, Unity, GtkRadiant)
  • Read and understand C++
