Job Summary
Red Barrels is the studio behind the immersive indie horror series Outlast, a series that has terrified more than 40 million players worldwide. Based in Montreal, Red Barrel’s mission is to create unforgettable experiences that leave the player’s blood running cold. Red Barrels is looking for a talented Level Artist who brings a high level of creativity and innovation to their work. This role involves working closely with designers, artists, and the programming team to bring a high-quality player experience to The Outlast Trials, creating horror settings and supporting the game's mood.
Must Have
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar role
- Bilingual in French and English (to navigate software tools)
- Excellent sense of scale, proportion, and composition
- Creativity and strong attention to detail
- Proficient in one of the major 3D modeling software packages (3DS Max, Blender, etc.)
- Knowledge of Physically Based Rendering (PBR)
- High level of proficiency in using game engines such as Unreal Engine
- Comfortable with horror elements (nudity, gore, mature visual research material)
- Ability to create horror settings and support game ambiances
- Result-oriented mindset
- Likes doing quick and efficient iterations
- Cooperating with Art Director, Art Technical Lead, Level Design Director and Level artist
- Creating strong environment storytelling with set dressing
- Ensuring levels are profiled and optimized
- Verifying map quality and making improvements
- Profiling performance and testing gameplay elements
- Designing materials and shaders

If you want to be part of our great fan horror team, here are some essentials to join us. You need to be comfortable with using or working with horror elements and all that genre entails (nudity, gore, "mature" visual research material, etc.). Of course, you must love to create horror settings, to support the mood /ambiances of the game, have a result-oriented mindset and like doing quick and efficient iterations. And if you want to impress us more, having an experience shipping for at least one AAA title with a significant contribution would be amazing!
MAIN MISSION
Red Barrels is looking for a talented Level Artist who brings a high level of creativity and innovation to their work. We are looking for someone who is interested in doing things differently and thrives in a cross studio collaborative environment. This role would have you working closely with designers, artists, and the programming team to bring a high-quality player experience to The Outlast Trials.
Tasks and Mission
- Cooperating with the Art Director, Art Technical Lead, Level Design Director and Level artist to maintain artistic consistency and vision for the game while building stellar levels and scenes according to project needs.
- Creating strong environment storytelling with set dressing
- Ensure levels are profiled and optimized to adhere to performance targets where needed.
- Verify the quality of the maps once they are imported into the game and make any necessary improvements.
- Profile performance and test gameplay elements of a completed level to be able to optimize and troubleshoot issues that arise.
- Design materials and shaders to achieve the best possible final quality.
- Be result oriented and like to work doing quick and efficient iterations.
Profile Requirements
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a similar role.
- Bilingual in French and English (to navigate software tools).
