The role involves developing groundbreaking techniques and pipelines for feature films and episodic content, requiring a blend of artistic sensibility and technical acumen, particularly with Houdini and Solaris USD. Responsibilities include creating 3D environments, performing layout and set dressing, ensuring published environments function correctly, contributing to tool development, collaborating with the lighting department, presenting environments for feedback, and participating in team reviews and creative problem-solving.

Position Summary

Are you a visionary Technical Environment Artist with a passion for pushing the boundaries of virtual world creation? Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) London is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Technical Environment Artist to join our innovative team. This isn't just about crafting stunning environments; it's about shaping the tools and workflows that empower our entire department to achieve unparalleled visual fidelity in feature films and episodic content.

At ILM, you'll be at the forefront of developing groundbreaking techniques and pipelines for some of the most ambitious projects in the industry. We're looking for someone who thrives on solving complex technical challenges and possesses a unique blend of artistic sensibility and deep technical acumen, particularly with Houdini and Solaris USD.

What you'll do:

  • Responsible for creating 3D environments, both photorealistic and stylized.

  • Performing layout and set dressing of environments using 3D assets.

  • Ensuring published environments function correctly in the pipeline.

  • Contribute to the development of department tools and workflows in collaboration with HoD and pipeline engineers.

  • Work with the lighting department to ensure environments render efficiently and without errors.

  • Responsible for presenting lit and shaded environments for feedback.

  • Working with lead environment artists to address any creative or technical feedback.

  • Participating in team reviews of work under development.

  • Meeting defined milestones within a timeline by attending dailies and participating in creative problem-solving.
     

What we're looking for:

We're seeking a Senior Technical Environment Artist who embodies technical excellence and has a proven track record of innovation:

  • Proven experience with designing workflows in large production pipelines.

  • Highly experienced with building tools/HDAs in Houdini.

  • Experience with USD and Solaris.

  • Experience with streamlining large production scenes across packages.

  • Proficiency with scripting/automation.

  • Proven track record contributing to photorealistic CG landscapes.

  • Proficiency with procedural set dressing and scattering systems, including Layout.

  • Technically proficient, self-motivated, proactive, and enjoys problem-solving.

  • Engages in the creative process with an inclusive and encouraging approach.

  • Excellent time keeping skills, attention to targets and deadlines.

  • Understanding of visual language - texture, colour, dimension, scale, perspective, lighting, shade, composition depth of field, proportion, etc.

This role is Hybrid, which means the employee will be required to work a minimum of 2 days on-site per week at a Company designated location, and occasionally from home.
