The Expert Network Engineer will be responsible for designing, configuring, and commissioning optical network solutions, both remotely and on-site in datacenter, carrier, or enterprise network environments. They will provide technical assistance for troubleshooting and support demos, trials, and customer training. The engineer will create detailed system design documentation, provide configuration and deployment support, and respond to technical issues. They will also assist in maintaining Optical Networking labs, support the Operations team, help with troubleshooting, and perform customer training.
Must have:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field.
  • 5-10 years experience in Optical Networking.
  • Knowledge of Optical Networking products.
  • Hands-on experience with telecommunication transport systems.
Good to have:
  • Working knowledge of physical infrastructure design.
  • Working knowledge about network management systems.
  • Experience with optical network test/measurement tools.
  • Server and software scripting skills.
  • Good presentation and communication skills.

Job Summary

Adtran Services Team is seeking a highly motivated Expert Network Engineer that is passionate about delivering flawless implementations of optical network solutions, both remote and onsite in datacenter, carrier or enterprise network environments. The responsibility of the Expert Network Engineer will be inclusive of design, configuration and commissioning, and to provide technical assistance for troubleshooting as required. The ideal candidate will possess the skills and versatility to support Demos, Trials and/or Customer Training as required for the professional services organization. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide detailed system design documentation in advance of product implementation.
  • Provide configuration and deployment support for Adtran’s Customers, with limited level of support and supervision including:
    • On site and remote support of installation and commissioning during or outside of normal business hours.
    • Utilization of implementation best practices, and contribution in further enhancing best practice to support scalable implementation solutions of Optical Networking products and related software solutions.
    • Respond to and provide technical support and direction to any issues that may surface at the time of, or resulting from the implementation
    • Create deployment packages and maintain as-built documentation for installed network elements
    • Provide knowledge transfer during implementation phase to promote customer success
  • Assist other engineers with establishing and maintaining Optical Networking labs for trainings or other professional services activities.
  • Support Operations team in delivering staged products for customers.
  • Help customer network operations with fault isolation, troubleshooting, improve customer experience during downtime of Adtran’s WDM products and management software.  
  • Perform customer trainings and work with global training team to develop new curriculum and training innovations.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with specialization related to Networking, or related field required. 
  • 5 -10 years of relevant experience in Optical Networking or Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Networking is required.
  • Knowledge of Optical Networking products from competition of 100Gb/s and beyond is  required.
  • Hands on experience with telecommunication transport systems, optical engineering concepts, technologies, instrumentation, test and/or implementation methodologies is essential.
  • Good technical background in WDM, OTN, Optical Fiber and appropriate network management software.
  • Knowledge of Carrier Networks, Enterprise Networks including Data Center networking is essential.
  • Some travel is expected to various educational and trade events.

Preferred Qualifications (Optional)

  • Working knowledge of physical infrastructure design including AC/DC power, Carier demarks, structured cabling and fiber-optic cabling.
  • Working knowledge about network management systems and management connectivity (DCN).
  • Practical experience with optical network test/measurement tools like power meter, OSA, BER testers, OTDR and other fiber characterization test sets.
  • Highly desirable to have server and software scripting skills.
  • Good presentation and communication skills.
  • Experience with MS Office; proficient with VISIO, Excel, and PowerPoint.
