Job Summary

The Systems Engineer will join the Thales Defence Mission Systems Domain, focusing on developing sonar capabilities and supporting the Undersea Warfare business sector in Australia. The role involves performing system engineering tasks to maintain and support Scylla sonars and associated equipment, working within a diverse team of engineers and production staff. Occasional extended hours and travel may be required.

Must Have

  • Ensure systems engineering activities are completed following appropriate methodologies defined in project Engineering Management Plans
  • Ensure engineering activities follow appropriate Systems Engineering Methodologies and company CHORUS 2 DDQS Processes
  • Elicit and capture customer needs and through life cycle concerns for systems and/or subsystems
  • Formalize specifications and engineering plans used to develop the solution/product
  • Perform requirement capture, review, analysis, tracing, and validation
  • Conduct alignment and compliance checks against customer needs and higher-level system requirements
  • Assemble solution/product elements to evaluate design, behavior, interactions, and performance
  • Prepare solution/product design and development artifacts supporting contract deliverable requirements
  • Perform integration, verification, and validation activities and data capture linked to requirements
  • Prepare reports capturing planned and achieved integration, verification, and validation support activities
  • Demonstrate the solution/product satisfies overall approved operational needs and is ready for release
  • Work with manufacturing, maintenance, and repair teams to deliver and maintain equipment and systems
  • Provide engineering support to the Customer and end users through responses to questions or on-site activities
  • Hold a Mechanical, software, electronics/electrical or systems engineering degree and meet IEAust membership requirements
  • Possess a strong background in systems engineering, software development or hardware development
  • Have practical experience in all phases of the Systems Engineering Life Cycle, processes and principles
  • Have practical experience in requirements development, requirements management and the use of requirement management tools
  • Have experience of integration, verification, validation, qualification engineering
  • Be eligible to obtain and maintain an appropriate Australian Government security clearance

The Defence Mission Systems Domain is a leading provider of integrated mission solutions to surface ships and submarines, and is the No.1 Naval fleet support and technical services company in Australia. It is also a specialist in the upgrade of naval vessels providing systems and platforms integration capabilities. The Systems Engineer will be part of a diverse team of engineers, technicians, production staff and management involved in the development of sonar capabilities and more broadly provide project and business operations support to the Undersea Warfare business sector of Under Water Systems in Australia. Specifically, performing system engineering related tasks to maintain and support the Scylla sonars and associated equipment and systems. The role may require occasional extended hours and occasional local or interstate travel.

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Systems Engineer, you are accountable for:

  • Ensuring systems engineering activities are completed, following the appropriate methodologies defined in project Engineering Management Plans
  • Ensuring engineering activities follow appropriate Systems Engineering Methodologies, undertaking work in accordance with the company CHORUS 2 DDQS (Design, Develop, Qualify the Solution) Processes.
  • Elicitation and capture of the customer’s needs and through life cycle concerns for systems and/or subsystems.
  • Formalisation of specifications and the engineering plans used to develop the solution / product
  • Requirement capture, review, analysis, tracing and validation
  • Alignment and compliance checks against customer needs and higher-level system requirements.
  • Assembly of the solution / product elements in a logical and controlled manner to evaluate the design, behaviour, interactions and performance, and to confirm the requirements against which the solution / product has been designed are fulfilled
  • Preparation of solution / product design and development artefacts supporting contract deliverable requirements
  • Integration, verification and validation activities and data capture linked to requirements
  • Preparation of reports capturing the planned and achieved integration, verification and validation support activities against solution / product requirements.
  • Demonstrating the solution / product satisfies the overall approved operational needs and the product data package is ready for release to production and to operation and support.
  • Working with the manufacturing, maintenance and repair teams to deliver and maintain equipment and systems.
  • Providing engineering support to the Customer and end users, typically through responses to questions or on-site activities.

KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in your role, you will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following knowledge and experience:

  • Mechanical, software, electronics/electrical or systems engineering degree and able to meet the requirements for membership of IEAust.
  • A strong background in systems engineering, software development or hardware development.
  • Practical experience in all phases of the Systems Engineering Life Cycle, processes and principles.
  • Practical experience in requirements development, requirements management and the use of requirement management tools.
  • Experience of integration, verification, validation, qualification engineering
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
