Job Description

House of How Games is seeking a Tools Developer to create advanced tools that enhance game development workflows across various tech stacks including web, desktop, Python, and AI. The role involves collaborating with senior developers, artists, and designers to build user-friendly asset creation and management tools, with a focus on integrating generative AI systems. This position is ideal for a mid-level developer with experience in tools and pipeline development, particularly in video games and user interface development. The role emphasizes an iterative and experimental environment, leading to polished user experiences and supporting both technical and non-technical users. Responsibilities include connecting disparate tools, integrating AI backends, creating responsive UIs with modern frameworks like React, and contributing to code quality and documentation.
Must have:
  • 4+ years of professional software development experience, with a focus on tools development.
  • 2+ years in modern mobile or web UI development.
  • Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, Javascript, C#, or C++.
  • Experience building interactive web-based user interfaces.
  • Solid understanding of software design principles, debugging, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with integrating APIs or services (e.g., REST, GraphQL).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical disciplines.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Authorized to work and located in the United States, Canada, or the Western US (Pacific Timezone).
Good to have:
  • Experience with generative AI models (OpenAI, Stable Diffusion, vector databases).
  • Experience developing software in TypeScript and Python.
  • Experience in graphics pipeline (BabylonJS, THREE.js, WebGL) or animation tools.
  • Experience in game development with Unity or Unreal.

Job Description

House of How is looking for a Tools Developer to help build cutting-edge high-impact tools that streamline game development and creative workflows. You’ll work across multiple tech stacks — web, desktop, Python, AI-driven services, and beyond — and take ownership of features that expose powerful functionality through a clean, user-friendly UI. You’ll be partnering with a world-class team with access to cutting edge technology and extreme resources. We are here to go fast and change the world!

This is a mid-level role suited for a developer with solid experience building tools and pipelines, especially ones with a strong foundation in video game and user interface development. You’ll collaborate with senior developers, artists, and designers to help create new video game asset creation and management tools that are fundamentally more powerful than anything available today. Many of these tools will integrate with generative AI systems and support both technical and non-technical users, so an ability to think across systems, services, and user experience is key. You can expect an iterative/prototyping environment with an emphasis on experimentation that leads to polished user experiences.

This is a 4-6 month contract position with potential for full-time employment.

Responsibilities

  • Connect disparate tools across multiple platforms (e.g., web, desktop, Python, Node/React, CLI tools).
  • Collaborate with artists, designers, and engineers to understand their needs and create powerful, user-friendly solutions.
  • Integrate generative AI backends (LLMs, image generation, vector search, etc.) and other novel solutions.
  • Create responsive and maintainable UI using modern frameworks (e.g., React).
  • Participate in prototyping and experimentation, particularly around new workflows or AI-powered features.
  • Write clear, maintainable code and contribute to internal documentation and code reviews.
  • Support existing tools and iterate on improvements based on user feedback.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of professional experience in software development, with a strong foundation in tools development.
  • 2+ years in modern mobile or web UI development.
  • Proficiency in at least one major language (e.g., Python, TypeScript, Javascript, C#, or C++).
  • Experience building interactive web-based user interfaces.
  • Solid understanding of software design principles, debugging, and development best practices.
  • Familiarity with integrating APIs or services (e.g., REST, GraphQL).
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively across technical and non-technical disciplines.
  • Written and spoken English fluency.
  • Cleared to work and located in the United States, Canada, or the Western US (Pacific Timezone).

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience working with or building around generative AI models (OpenAI, Stable Diffusion, vector databases, etc.).
  • Experience developing software in Typescript and Python.
  • Experience in graphics pipeline (BabylonJS, THREE.js, WebGL, etc.), animation tools, and data visualization.
  • Experience in game development with Unity or Unreal.

Compensation

Although we’re a relatively small-and-growing remote team, we work hard to offer competitive rates regardless of location. The base pay ranges for this role in Washington state and California, enumerated by rank, are as follows:
