Job Description

The Head of Training is responsible for the leadership of teams delivering technology-enabled training and services to Defence, Government, and Industry customers, focused on High Reliability Organisations (HROs). This role also contributes to new revenue generation, ensures governance of Thales Training and Simulation solutions, and oversees training standards across Thales Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, the manager provides thought leadership to Thales’ global Training and Simulation strategy.

Must Have:
  • Lead teams delivering technology-enabled training and services.
  • Contribute to new revenue generation and ensure governance of training solutions.
  • Oversee training standards, governance, processes, and quality across Thales Australia and New Zealand.
  • Provide functional leadership for TTS instructors and operational management for training specialists.
  • Act as Project Design Authority for training solutions and deliver for complex bids/projects.
  • Manage the Training budget and develop Australia's Training Services strategy.
  • Manage training knowledge, skills, and governance across Thales Australia.
  • Hold CERTIV TAE40116 or equivalent.
  • Possess graduate qualifications in leadership.
  • Minimum 5 years in organisational leadership.
  • Minimum 10 years in learning and development, preferably in HROs.
  • Experience with ASDEFCON contracting and Systems Approach to Defence Learning (SADL).

ABOUT YOUR ROLE

Training Design and Delivery Manager:

The Head of Training is responsible for the leadership of a number of teams delivering technology enabled training and services to Defence, Government and Industry customers, focussed on High Reliability Organisations (HROs). The Head of Training is also responsible for contributing to the generation of new revenue sources, and for assurance and governance of Thales Training and Simulation’s training solutions. In addition, the Training Design and Delivery Manager has a secondary duty as the Head of Discipline - Training in Thales Australia’s Engineering Competence Centre. Reporting to the Head of ILS, the HoD – Training is responsible for overseeing the standards, governance, processes, and quality of training across Thales Australia and New Zealand.

Finally, as one of the key subject matter experts in the Training and Simulation Business Line, the Head of Training contributes to Thales’ global Training and Simulation strategy, providing thought leadership and guidance to senior and executive leadership.

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As Head of Training, you are accountable for:

  • The functional leadership for all TTS instructors (perimeter of ~12), including:
  • The operational manager for some training specialists (perimeter of ~5)
  • Project Design Authority for training solutions
  • Deliver training solutions for complex, must-win bids
  • Deliver training solutions for complex, critical projects
  • Manage the Training budget
  • Develop and deliver the Training Services strategy in Australia
  • Contribute to the growth of the business through support to business development initiatives

In addition, as a secondary role, as HoD Training in the Australian Engineering Competency Centre, you are accountable for:

  • Training knowledge management and capitalisation
  • Value analysis and cost estimation for training solutions
  • Skills management for training across Thales Australia
  • Governance of training services across Thales Australia
  • Developing and owning a Chorus 2.0 process for training
  • Training competitiveness & performance improvement
  • Training strategy advisory
  • Training solution craftsmanship
  • The Thales Australia Training Community of Practice

KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in your role, you will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following knowledge and experience:

  • As a minimum, must hold CERTIV TAE40116 or equivalent, preferably diploma or degree in VET or L&D
  • Must hold graduate qualifications in leadership, or equivalent training from an organisation comparable in complexity and size to Thales
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in organisational leadership
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in learning and development, preferably in Defence, Aviation or another High Reliability Organisation (HRO)
  • Must have experience with ASDEFCON contracting
  • Must have experience with the Systems Approach to Defence Learning (SADL)
  • Desirable to have had experience as a training solution architect for Defence or industry tenders
  • Desirable to have experience in organisational thought-leadership, including writing white papers and presenting at conferences
