Job Description

Flying Bark Productions is seeking a CG Supervisor to oversee the technical requirements of an animated series. The role involves working closely with the VFX Supervisor and department supervisors, focusing on pipeline, recruitment, workflows, and technical/creative breakdown. The ideal candidate will have specialized in lookdev and assets, be proficient in Katana, Maya, and capable of developing Houdini workflows. They will manage multiple episodes, ensuring high production value in layout, backgrounds, look development, lighting, FX, and compositing, while maintaining quality and schedule.
Good To Have:
  • Experience with Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ghostbusters, Stranger Things animated series, or Tales From Outer Suburbia.
  • Experience with off-shore supervising studio liaison.
  • Ability to keep up to date on new technologies for fx, lighting, rendering, fur and hair techniques.
Must Have:
  • Oversee technical requirements of animated series.

Flying Bark Productions is a dynamic and innovative animation studio dedicated to pushing the boundaries of character animation and storytelling. We are working on exciting projects such as Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Netflix's Ghostbusters animated series and Stranger Things animated series, as well as our production Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.

We are looking for a CG Supervisor who will work closely with the VFX Supervisor and department supervisors to oversee the technical requirements of an exciting animated series we're producing. You will have sound knowledge of all technical and creative aspects of production and be involved in the assessment of everything from pipeline, recruitment, workflows and processes as well as the technical and creative breakdown of the scope of work. The successful candidate will ideally have specialised in the front end of production during their career, with particular focus on lookdev and assets.

You will be a specialist in Katana and Maya (software), capable of being very hands-on, as well as strategic in order to establish the pipeline and efficient workflows. Be hands-on in aiding the pipeline to develop a Houdini workflow and pipeline in the studio. You should have capacity to manage multiple episodes, paying particular attention to the layout, backgrounds, look development , lighting, FX and compositing departments in order to establish high production value shots whilst meeting the quality benchmark on the series and the established look of the show.

Artistic, and technically driven, you will be well-rounded in all aspects of CG production. Technically interpreting and supporting the Directors’ vision and ensuring the highest quality of work is achieved within the parameters of the schedule and budget, while keeping a watchful eye and reporting any issues with the project deliverables.

Your excellent lighting and technical skills will be utilised both in-house and with the off-shore supervising studio.

A strong natural leader, you will be comfortable in providing clear direction to all CG departments and liaising with the corresponding departments at the client’s studios, setting clear objectives, monitoring their process, progress and results. You will be able to clearly brief developers on user specifications for the pipeline. You will determine, modify and maintain the most effective and efficient technical approach and workflow possible.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Discuss and evaluate the feasibility of the Program/s within the constraints of budget and schedule (in association with the Line Producer and/or Producer). Specifically, assessing creative designs including production design and characters, story, camera, animation and lighting/compositing expectations as communicated by the Director’s unit and define limitations for the Program/s and/or appropriate alternatives and solutions for the production;
  • Assess the technical requirements for the Program/s and make clear plans for equipment, software, data storage and backup, pipeline, crew and schedule in association with the technical, creative and production supervisors for the Program/s;
  • Work with the VFX Supervisor to ensure the creative look of the surfacing, lighting, FX and compositing is maintained in line with the Director’s vision;
  • Work closely with the Pipeline team to create efficient and automated workflows and processes, taking into consideration the overall requirements for all projects within the Production Company;
  • Ensure the final Program/s are delivered to the correct technical specifications set-out by the Clients and in line with the creative expectations of the Director and Producer;
  • Implement efficient communication systems, workflow, file systems and production tracking in line with budget and schedule requirements;
  • Manage and support artists and TDs through formal and timely communication including regular meetings, email updates and reviews;
  • Keep oversight of the production schedules for the Program/s and identify all potential delays, disruptions or other perceived risks to the Company;
  • Maintain strong relationships with key creative, technical and production crew of other vendors working on the show and ensure smooth sharing of data between them;
  • Attend all meetings and creative/technical reviews as required by the Company, including daily catch ups and tech reviews;
  • Attend overseas business trips as reasonably required by the Company;
  • Plan and communicate workflow, suggest file systems and set-up production tracking for the overseas studio partners and service studios in line with production, budget and schedule requirements;
  • Keep up to date on new technologies for fx, lighting, rendering, fur and hair techniques, putting in weekly on-box time for research and development;
  • Meet with key members of the supervising technical team and maintain good relationships with production, I.T. and studio administration to ensure the production operates harmoniously within the studio and is adaptive to possible interruptions, changes or plans to satisfy the greater good of the studio;
  • When requested, be involved in company assessment and decision making of new projects; new software and systems and their implementation; brainstorming sessions that require technical and creative input to find solutions:
  • Encourage open communication within the crew and a positive, solutions focused approach to problem solving throughout production;

And all other duties and responsibilities as reasonably required by the Company.

Skillset:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication;
  • Superior knowledge of CG pipeline, processes, software and other related technical aspects for television and film production.
  • Superior team leadership skills including, diplomacy, patience, solutions focused thinking, calm under pressure, excellent time management and conflict management skills;
  • Senior knowledge and ability as a CG artist, lighting and compositing artist.
