About the Opportunity
The Director of Categories is a senior leadership role responsible for driving growth, strategy, and operational excellence across eBay Australia’s Focus Categories: Parts & Accessories, Pre-Loved Fashion, Collectibles, and Refurbished. Reporting to the General Manager of eBay Australia, this role oversees a team of senior category leaders and managers, ensuring each category delivers strong performance and aligns with eBay’s global strategy while meeting the unique needs of the Australian market.
This position requires a strategic, commercially minded leader with deep marketplace experience and the ability to inspire and develop high-performing teams. The Director will shape category direction, own P&L accountability, build strategic seller and partner relationships, and represent eBay externally as a category thought leader.
Key Responsibilities
Category Strategy
- Lead the development and execution of strategies for Focus Categories, ensuring delivery of financial targets (e.g., Gross Merchandise Volume, revenue) and other KPIs.
- Oversee P&L accountability across categories, managing trade-offs and investments to drive sustainable growth.
- Anticipate and respond to market trends, consumer behaviors, and competitor dynamics to position eBay Australia as a leader in these categories.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of senior managers across multiple categories, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and performance.
- Ensure clear goal-setting, resource prioritization, and alignment across categories to maximize impact.
- Serve as a role model for eBay’s values, championing diversity, inclusion, and collaboration.
Seller & Partner Ecosystem
- Working directly and through team, build and maintain strong relationships with top sellers, brands, refurbishers, and industry partners, ensuring eBay is the partner of choice for growth.
- Act as a senior spokesperson with industry stakeholders and media on category-related topics, reinforcing eBay’s leadership position.
Customer & Market Insights
- Drive a deep understanding of buyers and sellers across categories by leveraging data analytics, research, and direct market engagement.
- Translate insights into actionable strategies to improve buyer trust, seller success, and overall marketplace competitiveness.
Cross-Functional & Global Collaboration
- Partner with Product, Marketing, Finance, Legal, Trust, and Operations teams to deliver seamless execution of strategies and initiatives.
- Influence global colleagues to adapt and localize product, policy, and marketing priorities for the Australian market.
- Ensure alignment between local priorities and eBay’s global strategic direction.
Innovation & Transformation
- Identify and implement innovative approaches to accelerate category growth and enhance the buyer and seller experience.
- Champion digital transformation and adoption of new tools, features, and experiences within categories.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to set and execute long-term category strategies that deliver against financial and operational targets.
- Commercial Acumen: Strong budget and goal management skills and ability to make data-driven trade-off decisions.
- Marketplace/E-commerce Expertise: Significant experience in category management, business development, or commercial leadership within an e-commerce or marketplace environment.
- Analytical Strength: Ability to distill complex data and market trends into actionable strategies.
- People Leadership: Experience building, developing, and inspiring high-performing teams, including senior managers.
- Stakeholder Management: Exceptional influencing, communication, and presentation skills to engage senior internal and external stakeholders.
- External Representation: Comfortable serving as an external spokesperson with media, industry bodies, and partners.
- Change Orientation: Demonstrated success in navigating and leading through transformation in fast-moving, matrixed organizations.
