Job Description
JOB OVERVIEW
looking for a skilled Senior FinOps & Infrastructure-as-Code Platform Engineer to lead a long-term client engagement focused on cloud cost governance, Terraform-based infrastructure, and scalable platform guardrails.
This role is ideal for an engineer who has operated AWS infrastructure under real cost pressure, migrated manually provisioned resources safely into Terraform, built Golden Path infrastructure modules, and helped organizations move from reactive cost reporting to predictable, unit-based cost models
You will be embedded with a client, operating independently and owning results. The ideal candidate must have experience operating in a self-sufficient, agency-led model, owning problem discovery, solution design, execution, and stabilization end to end. Focus on goal-based deliverables rather than ticket queues, and build systems, documentation, and guardrails designed to last for years. Maintain overlap with US Central and/or Pacific Time working hours as needed.
Please note: you must have at least 5+ years of hands-on AWS infrastructure experience and deep experience with Terraform in production environments to be considered for this role.
JOB RESPONSIBILITY
FinOps as an Operating Model
- Design and implement FinOps practices embedded into infrastructure, not just dashboards.
- Improve cost attribution by team, service, feature, and tenant.
- Eliminate “unaccounted” or orphaned cloud spend.
- Establish predictable cost models to support 5–10× growth and M&A scenarios.
- Enable teams to understand the cost impact of architectural decisions.
Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
- Safely migrate manually provisioned AWS resources (RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, SQS, etc.) into Terraform using import-first, zero-diff approaches.
- Establish Terraform as the single source of truth for infrastructure ownership and cost attribution.
- Design company-specific Terraform modules with secure, opinionated defaults.
- Reduce Terraform CI/CD complexity while improving stability and performance.
- Prevent drift and enforce guardrails through policy and automation.
Golden Paths & Guardrails
- Define and implement Golden Path infrastructure patterns that make the right choice the easy choice.
- Encode security, tagging, and cost controls directly into Terraform modules.
- Ensure new infrastructure cannot be created without clear ownership and accountability.
- Balance guardrails with developer autonomy.
Cost Attribution & Forecasting
- Build tooling and dashboards for retrospective cost analysis at the team and service level.
- Create forward-looking cost projection models based on usage units (e.g., per tenant, per event, per transaction).
- Support leadership planning for scaling scenarios and acquisitions.
- Integrate cost visibility into engineering workflows.
Platform Ownership & Collaboration
- Operate as an embedded platform partner with client infrastructure and engineering teams.
- Drive clarity of ownership by working directly with service teams.
- Lead deep-dive discovery sessions to identify risks, options, and trade-offs.
- Provide guidance, execution, and knowledge transfer.
EXPERIENCE
- BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent
- 7+ years of infrastructure or platform engineering experience
- 5+ years of hands-on AWS infrastructure experience.
- Deep experience with Terraform in production environments.
- Strong understanding of: FinOps principles and cost allocation models, Infrastructure governance and guardrails, and Safe migration of existing cloud resources.
- Experience building and operating shared platform infrastructure,
- Proven ability to operate independently and own outcomes.
- Comfortable working in environments with legacy infrastructure and organizational complexity.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- Initiative and drive to do great things.
Nice to Have
- Experience designing multi-account AWS environments.
- Experience with policy-as-code (OPA, Sentinel, etc.).
- Experience with multi-cloud abstraction strategies (and knowing when not to over-abstract).
- Experience supporting organizations through rapid growth or M&A.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for Terraform.
