Job Summary
Toca Boca is seeking a Technical Director to lead the technology vision and strategy for their live game service, Toca Boca World. This role involves defining architecture, guiding engineering decisions, elevating engineering excellence, and mentoring technical leaders. The director will partner with Production, Product, and Creative leadership to translate ideas into scalable technical realities, ensuring the stability and maintainability of the app and backend systems.
Must Have
- Set and own the technical vision and strategy for the entire game service

- Strong understanding of mobile development constraints
- Mastery of core languages such as C# or Typescript
- Proven success driving large, cross-team technical initiatives
- Exceptional communication and influence skills

Job Description
We’re looking for a Technical Director to shape the long-term technology vision and strategy of our live game service and ensure the architectural foundation that powers our app, backend systems, and production workflows. This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who thrives on solving complex technical challenges, influencing across disciplines, and elevating engineering craft at scale.
As Technical Director, you’ll act as the chief architect and strategic technology leader, partnering closely with Production, Product, and Creative leadership to turn big ideas into robust, scalable technical realities. You’ll also work close to the code and the teams, partnering with the Director of Engineering to drive engineering excellence, optimize developer productivity, and mentor our next generation of technical leaders.
What You’ll Do
- Set & Own the Technical Vision and Strategy: Define the long-term architecture, roadmap, and technology direction for the entire game service, ensuring scalability, stability, and maintainability
- Guide High-Impact Engineering Decisions: Act as the final authority on complex technical choices, proactively identifying and mitigating risks across all systems
- Elevate Engineering Excellence: Partner with the Director of Engineering to improve productivity, refine tooling, establish best practices, and drive continuous quality across teams
- Develop Technical Leaders: Mentor senior engineers and tech leads to strengthen their technical expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership capabilities
- Align the Studio: Collaborate closely with Production, Product, and Creative stakeholders to translate creative goals into feasible technical plans and communicate vision, progress, KPIs, and risks
What You Bring
- 10+ years in professional game development across the tech stack, with 5+ years in senior leadership or principal engineering roles on a major mobile titles
- Deep and proven experience architecting large-scale, persistent live-service games and high-traffic backend systems
- Strong understanding of mobile development constraints—performance, memory, and platform-specific considerations
- Mastery of core languages such as C# or Typescript
- Experience with Unity (our core engine) is a great bonus
- Proven success driving large, cross-team technical initiatives from concept through launch and live operations
- Exceptional communication and influence skills, especially when aligning teams and leaders without direct authority

This position is full time and based in our Stockholm office with a hybrid working model. We apply a 6 month probationary period. You’ll need to be located in Sweden as we are unable to support with relocation.
