Job Summary
CME Group is seeking a Default Management intern to join their risk management department. This role involves understanding all aspects of default management, maintaining and supporting existing tools, and developing new software solutions. The intern will work closely with business leaders to optimize performance and efficiency, applying finance and risk management skills in a structured program. The position is part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer.
Must Have
- Understand the business (default risk management) and its requirements.
- Design, develop, and test various risk management tools.
- Streamline and automate the workflow by introducing new and improved procedures.
- Support default management drills.
- Basic knowledge of derivative products (swaps, futures, options) across multiple asset classes.
- Proficiency in Excel is required.
- Pursuing a degree in Finance or a related field.
Good to Have
- Working knowledge of Python, VBA, and SQL.

Default Management Intern - Year Round
CME Group is currently looking for a Default Management intern.
The Default Management team is a specialized domain within the risk management department of the CME Group. The team performs various risk management tasks and other activities that pertain to managing a default. Default management activities are time critical, varied and sensitive in nature and we develop software solutions to automate these activities.
As an intern on this team, you will be involved in understanding all the aspects of default management, learn how to maintain and support the existing default management tools, and help develop new ones. You will work closely with business leaders to create and deliver solutions that optimize performance and efficiency. You will have the opportunity to apply and hone your finance and risk management skills in a structured program that allows you to work side-by-side with, and learn from, those who are thriving in this exciting and growing field. This role will be part time during the school year and full time during the summer.
Principal Accountabilities
- Understand the business (default risk management) and its requirements.
- Design, develop, and test various risk management tools.
- Streamline and automate the workflow by introducing new and improved procedures.
- Support default management drills.
Skills / Software Requirements
- Basic knowledge of derivative products (swaps, futures, options) across multiple asset classes (energy, metals, fixed income, etc.) is essential.
- Proficiency in Excel is required.
- Working knowledge of Python, VBA, and SQL is preferable.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Education
- Pursuing a degree in Finance or a related field.

Actual pay offered will be dependent on a wide array of factors including but not limited to: relevant experience, skills, education, location of the internship, and the internship area of focus.
