Job Description

As a Lead Data Scientist at Fairmatic, you will be a crucial part of the Research and Risk team. Your responsibilities include researching, developing, and improving machine learning models to predict claims frequency, severity, and fraud detection. You will research advanced modeling techniques, conduct continuous experimentation, and collaborate with various teams to productize your findings. The role also involves designing data collection strategies, translating business goals into research, and leading the Data Science team while fostering a collaborative culture. You'll use advanced statistics, machine learning, and mathematical approaches to develop risk models, create POCs, and ensure research aligns with company objectives.
Must have:
  • MSc/Ph.D. in Statistics or related field

We are looking for a talented Lead Data Scientist for our Research and Risk team, a team that is at the core of everything we do. In this role, you will research, develop and improve the machine learning models predicting claims frequency, claims severity and fraud detection. This role focuses on researching advanced modeling techniques, continuous experimentation, and an iterative approach to productizing our learnings. You will work closely with product management, underwriting, actuaries, machine learning engineers and other product/engineering teams.

A day in the life

    • Use advanced statistics, machine learning, and mathematical approaches to develop highly predictive risk models to enhance pricing, loss prediction, and rate plan optimization
    • Create POCs to validate new product ideas and experiments to improve existing predictive models
    • Design data collection strategies and their applications for building new products
    • Translate business goals into actionable research and ensure the research contributions align with company-wide objectives
    • Collaborate with engineering and product leads to ensure the successful deployment and scaling of research-driven solutions
    • Serve as a technical leader and coach for the Data Science team, helping to shape team processes and best practices
    • Exemplify and foster Fairmatic’s humble, collaborative and impact-obsessed culture

The skills you will bring:

    • MSc/Ph.D. in Statistics, Machine Learning, or a related field, with 7+ years of experience as a data scientist.
    • High proficiency in statistics, machine learning algorithms, data manipulation and analysis.
    • Extensive experience in research-oriented roles, analyzing business problems from a data science perspective, conducting literature research, and implementing and testing solutions
    • Expertise in supervised and unsupervised machine learning models (e.g., GLM, GAM, XGBoost, Deep Learning).
    • A proactive approach to staying updated with the latest developments in AI and incorporating them to enhance existing products.
    • A product-driven mindset with a knack for transforming research outcomes into impactful products.
    • Experience managing stakeholders and prioritizing across multiple business and technical needs.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate experiment goals and methodologies clearly and communicate insights effectively to the team.

Your tech skills should include:

    • Hands-on programming experience with Python, experience with machine learning frameworks
    • Experience with risk models and insurance companies - (not necessary, but useful)
    • Experience with telematics data and solution - (not necessary, but useful)
    • Experience in deploying production solutions -(not necessary, but useful)
