Job Summary

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II (MVII) is seeking an Asset Test Lead to plan, execute, and document testing and commissioning activities for automated heavy equipment like ARMGs, SQCs, AGVs, and ATTs. This role ensures equipment meets design specifications, safety standards, and operational readiness for the expanding terminal. The ideal candidate will have a Lean mindset, a technical degree, and 3-5 years of experience in commissioning/testing automated industrial equipment, contributing to a dynamic and innovative environment.

Must Have

  • Plan, execute, and document testing and commissioning activities of Automated Rail-Mounted Gantry Cranes (ARMGs), Super Quay Cranes (SQCs), Barge Feeder Cranes (BFCs), Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), Autonomous Terminal Tractors (ATTs) and Rail Gantry Cranes (RGCs).
  • Prepare Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
  • Coordinate functional, performance, and reliability tests on crane systems.
  • Validate automation integration with ABB control systems, Kuenz hardware, and TOS.
  • Verify compliance with safety systems (emergency stops, collision avoidance, obstruction detection).
  • Test crane performance parameters (lift speed, trolley travel, gantry travel).
  • Collaborate with automation teams to test remote control and unmanned operations.
  • Validate synchronization between ARMGs, AGVs/Lift-AGVs, and yard management systems.
  • Develop and maintain test plans, procedures, and checklists.
  • Record and analyze test results; report deviations and corrective actions.
  • Provide test certificates and commissioning sign-off documentation.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and safety documentation.
  • Work with OEM suppliers (Kuenz, ABB), contractors (CareGo consortium), and APMT project teams.
  • Support training for terminal staff in operations and maintenance.
  • Act as a technical liaison between commissioning teams, operations, and client representatives.
  • Completed Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, (Port)Logistics).
  • Proven experience as a Test Engineer, preferably in an industrial, logistics, or infrastructure environment.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in commissioning/testing of automated heavy equipment.
  • Experience with PLC/SCADA systems, drives, and crane automation.
  • Knowledge of safety standards (EN, IEC, ISO).
  • Hands-on experience with live equipment testing and/or Site Acceptance Testing.
  • Familiarity with highly automated environments (e.g. terminals, factories, or distribution centers).
  • Knowledge of test methodologies and tools especially in Jira/X-ray.
  • Extensive knowledge of systems in use at container terminals such as TOS, ECS.
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English, both written and spoken.
  • Having a car is essential for this role due to on-site presence.

With the terminal set to double in size through the ambitious Terminal Expansion Project and a Transformation, APMT Maasvlakte II is entering an exciting phase of growth and technological advancement. This project involves expanding terminal capacity and integrating advanced technologies, including autonomous trucks, automated systems, and cutting-edge logistics processes. Similarly, the organization is being developed to be fit for the future expanded terminal. Delivering a fully integrated, commissioned, and operational terminal to a trained operations team is a key objective.

The position

As a Test Lead, you will be responsible for planning, (partly) executing, and documenting the testing and commissioning activities of Automated Rail-Mounted Gantry Cranes (ARMGs), Super Quay Cranes (SQCs), Barge Feeder Cranes (BFCs), Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), Autonomous Terminal Tractors (ATTs) and Rail Gantry Cranes (RGCs) as part of the Maasvlakte II expansion project. This role ensures that cranes meet design specifications, safety standards, automation requirements, and operational readiness before handover to terminal operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Testing & Commissioning

  • Prepare Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).

  • Support digital twin/simulation testing prior to live deployment.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Develop and maintain test plans, procedures, and checklists.
  • Record and analyze test results; report deviations and corrective actions.
  • Provide test certificates and commissioning sign-off documentation.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and safety documentation.

Collaboration

  • Work with OEM suppliers (Kuenz, ABB), contractors (CareGo consortium), and APMT project teams.
  • Support training for terminal staff in operations and maintenance.
  • Act as a technical liaison between commissioning teams, operations, and client representatives.
