Job Description

The Controls Project Lead (CPL) is responsible for ensuring the successful launch of new programs and kitted systems related to Controls, Networks, and Robotics within the CLIENT Vehicle Process Engineering (VPE) environment. This role involves leading a multi-departmental team, developing and delivering applications, monitoring project progress, identifying potential obstacles, and coordinating work schedules. The CPL also supports the development and implementation of VPE CARE standards and continuously works towards advanced training and standard processes.

  • Knowledge of style tracking, RFID Technology related to plant floor automation.
  • Strong and proficient understanding of Computer Programming Skills (SQL, HTML, JAVA).
  • Experience with PLC interlocks with robots, ICT drivers for FIS, AVI, connectivity for PFS, PFCS, software & electrical, with interfacing with several controls equipment suppliers.
Must Have:
  • Ensure successful launch of new programs and kitted systems for Controls, Networks, and Robotics.
  • Lead a multi-departmental team in VPE CARE core functions.
  • Develop and deliver team applications.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to review progress and identify obstacles.
  • Monitor projects to meet technical and business objectives.
  • Supervise and manage controls and robotics integration.
  • Manage and maintain open controls & robotics issues.
  • Support equipment and tooling build at suppliers.
  • Supervise installation and commissioning of equipment.
  • Lead VPE CARE launch team in Metro Detroit and Brampton.
  • Lead execution, deployment, and integration of control devices, network architecture, robotics, communication systems, CIB, VPE CARE/ICT Joint Systems, and various auxiliary equipment.
  • Ensure build and process follow CLIENT standards.
  • Represent VPE CARE on project Controls Committee.
  • Provide management, tracking, resolution, and reporting on Action Register, open issues, campaigns, Tech-V punch lists, timeline goals, system audits, and robot tracking.
  • Chair weekly meetings with Line Integrators, subcontractors, and VPE teams.
  • Attend process bid review meetings and provide technical evaluation.
  • Assist Line Integrator staff with understanding controls, network architecture, robotics, CIB, VPE CARE/ICT systems.
  • Verify programming software, revisions, descriptors, symbols, and comments for logic.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or HSD with 5+ years of experience in a related field.
  • Problem solving skills specific to Controls systems.
  • Experience supervising or leading a team of technicians and engineers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite (PowerPoint, Excel).

Job Description

  • The Controls Project Lead (CPL) is responsible for ensuring a successful launch of new programs and kitted systems with regards to Controls, Networks and Robotics found within the CLIENT Vehicle Process Engineering (VPE) environment.
  • Participation and support in the development and implementation of Vehicle Process Engineering Controls, Automation, Robotics and Engineering (VPE CARE) standards and specifications during the design through the launch phase of new products are fundamental to this position.
  • This is accomplished through the direct leadership of a multi-departmental team of individuals, all with unique skill sets associated with their assigned roles. The scope of this team will span the core functions of VPE CARE in Paint.
  • The CPL is responsible for the development and delivery of their team’s applications, while leading the way in shaping the culture and craft of their respective team.
  • The CPL position is also tasked with conducting regular team meetings to review progress and identify potential obstacles, monitoring projects to meet their technical and business objectives, review of lessons learned, solutions to current and past issues, tracking and updating action registers and coordinating work schedules.
  • The CPL is also expected to continuously work towards the development of advanced training and standard processes.
  • Supervising and managing controls and robotics integration
  • Managing and maintaining open controls & robotics issues pertaining to the designated areas assigned, ranging from design to installation issues
  • Supporting equipment and tooling build at suppliers and ensuring timing and EEM controls & robotics milestones are on track
  • Supervising the installation and commissioning of equipment and launch
  • Reporting standardized updates to Prg Mgr

Needs to Support in Metro Detroit and Brampton:

  • Lead VPE CARE launch team
  • Lead the execution, deployment and integration of the following disciplines, to include all hardware and software, but not limited to:
  • Control Devices
  • Network Architecture
  • Robotics
  • Communication Systems
  • Center Information Boards (CIB)
  • VPE CARE/ICT Joint Systems
  • Auxiliary equipment
  • Light screens
  • Perimeter Laser Scanners (PLS)
  • Photo Eyes
  • RFID
  • Autonomous Guided Vehicle (AGV)
  • Autonomous Guided Cart (AGC)
  • Other auxiliary equipment, as required

Support VPE CARE program goals during launch to include, but not limited to:

  • Ensuring that build and process is following CLIENT standards
  • Leading/Supporting Controls Coordinators, Launch Engineers, and Robot Specialists in this task
  • Represent VPE CARE on the project Controls Committee and/or subcommittees
  • Support CLIENT process at plant on controls and robot projects
  • Through-put improvements
  • Cycle time improvements
  • Downtime resolution
  • Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) reduction
  • Provide any VPE CARE related reports

Provide management, tracking, resolution, follow up and reporting on the following:

  • Action Register (AR)
  • Open issues
  • New issues
  • Campaigns
  • Technical Verification (Tech-V) punch lists
  • Timeline goals
  • Line Integrator progress
  • System audits during all phases of the project
  • Interpret findings and implement corrective actions
  • Robot tracking
  • Lessons learned
  • Other matrices, as required

VPE Care Lead for Line Integrators

  • Chair weekly meeting between Line Integrators, subcontractors and VPE teams (as required) on responsible areas
  • Attend process bid review meetings and provide technical evaluation of Line Integrator bids
  • Assist the Line Integrator engineering and execution staff with understanding the controls, network architecture, robotics, CIB, VPE CARE/ICT systems and auxiliary equipment utilized for the program
  • Verify each new CLIENT PWS and/or Line Integrator supplied programming device (Laptop) has proper programming software, revisions and that the Line Integrator’s software descriptors, symbols and comments for logic are present.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or HSD with 5+ years of experience in a related field
  • Innovative thinker with excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Problem solving skills specific to Controls systems
  • Experience supervising or leading a team of technicians and engineers
  • Excellent presentation skills, both written and oral
  • Microsoft suite (ppt, excel…)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience with Information Technology Systems
  • Understanding of PLC Programing
  • Understanding of HMI Development; WinCC and Factory Talk View
  • Manufacturing automotive process engineering knowledge
  • CAD software (ePlan /AutoCAD) experience

  • Demonstrated team leadership and communication skills
  • Self-directed and motivated to implement change within the direction and scope of CLIENT
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present to Senior Management
  • 5+ years of Manufacturing, Engineering and Information Technology with an emphasis on Strategic Planning, IT Applications and Plant Floor Operations
  • Strong and proficient understanding of Computer Programming Skills (SQL, HTML, JAVA)
  • Experience with PLC interlocks with robots, ICT drivers for FIS, AVI and connectivity for PFS, PFCS, software & electrical, with interfacing with several controls equipment suppliers
