Job Summary
DONTNOD Entertainment is seeking a Level Designer F/H/X for a fixed-term or freelance contract. Reporting to the Lead Level Designer, you will design and implement missions and game spaces for an open-world Action-RPG. Your role involves creating dynamic, readable, and immersive game situations focused on combat, exploration, and investigation, ensuring clear and engaging progression. You will utilize Unreal Engine 5 to integrate, configure, and iterate on game missions and spaces, balancing combat encounters and interactive events.
Must Have
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Level Design or Quest Design on a 3D game (ideally Action-RPG or open world).
- Proficiency in a 3D game engine (ideally Unreal Engine 5).
- Experience with flowchart creation tools (Vision, Illustrator, Draw.io).
- Ability to design spaces that promote combat, movement, and exploration mechanics.
- Knowledge of scripting (Blueprints, visual scripting or equivalent language).
- Good level of professional English (read, spoken, and written).

Created in 2008, DONTNOD is an independent French studio for the creation and development of "AA" video games in popular genres: adventure (Life is Strange, Tell me Why, Twin Mirror), action (Remember Me), and role-playing games (Vampyr). Job Description
As part of the development of one of its projects, DONTNOD Entertainment is looking for a Level Designer F/H/X to strengthen its teams, on a fixed-term contract (CDD) or a freelance contract.
Under the responsibility of the Lead Level Designer and following the vision set by the creative direction, you will participate in the design and implementation of missions and game spaces for our open-world Action-RPG.
You will contribute to creating dynamic, readable, and immersive game situations, focused on combat, exploration, and investigation.
Design and integration of game levels:
- Design and structure missions, levels, and game situations integrating exploration, combat, and investigation, in coherence with the project's intentions and in collaboration with the Narrative teams.
- Define the gameplay objectives, rhythm, and stakes of your missions, ensuring clear and engaging progression.
- Create playable layouts (blockouts / greybox) in collaboration with the World and Art teams to ensure readability, flow, and playability.
- Use the game engine (Unreal Engine 5) to integrate, configure, and iterate on your missions and game spaces.
- Set up and balance combat encounters and interactive events (patrols, NPCs, objectives, etc.).
- Regularly test, adjust, and refine your levels to ensure a fluid, rhythmic, and satisfying game experience.
- Work closely with the Gameplay, Combat, AI, World Art, and Narrative teams to ensure world consistency and in-game feel quality.
- Identify and correct scripting, logic, or gameplay bugs.
- Precisely document your intentions and iterations to foster communication within the team.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Level Design or Quest Design on a 3D game, ideally an Action-RPG or an open-world game.
- Proficiency in a 3D game engine (ideally Unreal Engine 5) and experience with a flowchart creation tool (Vision, Illustrator, Draw.io...).
- Ability to design spaces that promote combat, movement, and exploration mechanics.
- Knowledge of scripting (Blueprints, visual scripting, or equivalent language).
- Good level of professional English (read, spoken, and written).
- Creative, autonomous, and rigorous, you like to iterate to improve gameplay and propose concrete solutions.
- A good communicator, you appreciate teamwork, knowledge sharing, and co-creation within an interdisciplinary environment.
