Job Description
We are looking for a Level Designer with strong expertise in designing urban and city environments.
About the project:
We are looking for a Level Designer with strong expertise in designing urban and city environments. The ideal candidate understands how real cities function—street hierarchy, navigation, zoning, landmarks—and can translate that knowledge into engaging, believable game spaces. You will design concept maps, greybox blockouts, and city layouts that feel coherent, fun to explore, and aligned with gameplay needs. Titles with a similar feel include GTA, Saints Row, and other open-world urban games.
Responsibilities:
- Create high-level city layouts: districts, neighborhoods, zones with clear identities.
- Define primary/secondary routes, shortcuts, hubs, and points of interest.
- Ensure logical placement of residential, commercial, industrial, and special-purpose areas.
- Design player movement routes for both on-foot and vehicle traversal.
- Establish chokepoints, landmarks, vistas, and navigation aids.
- Support intended gameplay loops (missions, encounters, exploration).
- Produce top-down concept maps with street hierarchy and key structures.
- Build 3D blockouts/greyboxes in-engine (Unreal, Unity, or similar).
- Iterate layouts based on gameplay, technical, and art constraints.
- Work closely with Game Design, Art, and Tech teams to align city layout with narrative, missions, and system design.
- Prepare clear documentation: layout rationales, design principles, reference packs.
- Provide visual references (screenshots, real-world analogs, sketches).
Requirements:
- 3+ years as a Level Designer or World Designer on 3D games.
- Portfolio demonstrating urban/city environment design (open cities, dense districts, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of:
- Urban design principles: zoning, street hierarchy, landmarks, sightlines.
- Player experience in cities: readability, pacing, orientation, encounter density.
- Experience with a major game engine (Unreal Engine, Unity, etc.) for:
- Creating blockouts/greyboxes.
- Setting up basic navigation and playable spaces.
- Ability to create clear documentation and maps in English.
Why do we enjoy working here?
