Job Summary

The Systems Engineering Sub-Discipline Manager provides System Engineering support throughout the project life cycle, from requirements analysis and design to development, integration, test, and acceptance of electronic systems on commercial and military platforms. This role supports the Manager, Systems Engineering in improving best practices, processes, tools, and governance, acting as a primary contact on complex subjects and an educational mentor. Responsibilities include resource management, team development, and ensuring discipline excellence. The manager also performs SysEng work on bids, projects, and products, focusing on holistic system analysis, understanding system capabilities, and requirements definition.

Must Have

  • Provide System Engineering support throughout the project life cycle from requirements analysis and design, through development, integration, test and acceptance.
  • Support the Manager, Systems Engineering in inspiring and catalysing the improvement of best practices, processes, tools and governance.
  • Act as a primary point of contact on complex subjects and take on an educational role.
  • Provide appropriate resources to deliver bids, projects and products.
  • Plan the team’s workload in the short, medium and long term.
  • Develop team skills to support bids, projects and products.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, career management and succession planning for the team.
  • Coach, mentor and develop the team.
  • Lead the team to meet company expectations for productivity, chargeability, quality, continuous improvement and accomplishment of objectives.
  • Ensure that company policies and procedures are followed.
  • Responsible for performing SysEng work on bids, projects and products.
  • Ability to adopt a holistic approach to analyse a system.
  • Able to understand the system capabilities through functional, logical and value analytics.
  • Understand the importance of requirements definition through a process using performance analysis, trade studies, constraint evaluation and cost/benefit analysis.
  • Able to adopt a Model Based Systems Engineering and see how it serves as a basis for architecture.
  • Notions of IVVQ (Integration/Verification/Validation/Qualification), R-A-M-T (Reliability/Maintainability/Availability/Testability) and associated norms and standards.

Good to Have

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, or a related field.
  • Management of budget worth at least 200k CAD.
  • Experience in the Defence industry.
  • Fluency in French.

Position Summary

The Systems Engineering Sub-Discipline Manager provides System Engineering support throughout the project life cycle from requirements analysis and design, through development, integration, test and acceptance to integrate electronic systems on commercial and military platforms. The Systems Engineering Sub-Discipline Manager supports the Manager, Systems Engineering in inspiring and catalysing the improvement of best practices, processes, tools and governance within the Systems Engineering discipline, ensuring that they are mastered effectively. They act as a primary point of contact on complex subjects and take on an educational role so that their team can reach discipline excellence and deliver competitive solutions within a multidisciplinary environment. They are a mentor and coach - serving the discipline’s engineers and offering a diverse and inclusive environment. They are the guardians of an engineering discipline excellence in a learning environment which contribute to our highly competitive advantage.

The Systems Engineering Sub-Discipline Manager reports to the Manager, Systems Engineering.

Travel: Occasional national and international travel. About 4 times per year.

Key Areas of Responsibility

As a Resource Manager,

  • Provides appropriate resources to deliver bids, projects and products
  • Plans the team’s workload in the short, medium and long term
  • Develops team skills to support bids, projects and products
  • Supports recruitment, onboarding, performance management, career management and succession planning for the team
  • Coaches, mentors and develops the team
  • Leads the team to meet company expectations for productivity, chargeability, quality, continuous improvement and accomplishment of objectives
  • Ensures that company policies and procedures are followed, including timesheets, time off, and travel

As an Engineering Manager, supports the Manager, Systems Engineering

  • In the establishment, standardization and evolution of processes, procedures and tooling for the discipline
  • In ensuring that the discipline processes, procedures and tooling meet the current and future needs of the bids, projects and products
  • In the development of lessons learned and the sharing of knowledge and experience across the discipline
  • Foster continuous improvement based on root cause analysis, problem solving and new practice deployment
  • For bid, project and product estimates for the discipline and sub-disciplines

As a member of the Systems Engineering team,

  • Responsible for performing SysEng work on bids, projects and products
  • You have the ability to adopt a holistic approach to analyse a system, focusing on the way that a system’s constituent parts interrelate and how systems work over time and within the context of larger systems
  • You are able to understand the system capabilities through functional, logical and value analytics
  • You understand the importance of requirements definition through a process using performance analysis, trade studies, constraint evaluation and cost/benefit analysis
  • You are able to adopt a Model Based Systems Engineering and see how it serves as a basis for architecture

Basic Qualifications

  • An engineering degree or 3-year technical program diploma in a technical field from a recognized university or college program or certified as a technologist by a recognized provincial, state, or federal (national) licensing body in a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the last 10 years managing a SysEng team
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the last 10 years of responsibility for SysEng functions
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in the last 10 years as a Systems Engineering Manager for a Capital or In-Service Support contract
  • Expertise in at least one SysEng tool
  • Expertise in at least one SysEng standard
  • Expertise in Requirements Management
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as a people or resource manager
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience managing a budget
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

Total Target Cash (TTC) 111,710.72 - 201,817.01 CAD Annual
