Job Summary
Asobo Studio, with over 20 years of experience and 25 games, including Microsoft Flight Simulator and A Plague Tale, is seeking a Technical Animator. This role offers the opportunity to join an experienced and ambitious team, contribute to a new narrative game, and develop animation tools. You will work autonomously, collaborating closely with Animation and Art departments to create exceptional interactive experiences for players.
Must Have
- Design and develop tools for character artists, riggers/skinners, and animators.
- Be the reference for your tools throughout production.
- Document tools: usage, workflow, best practices.
- Support character artists and animators for pipeline setup and optimization.
- Occasionally rig/skin animatable elements (living beings, objects, vehicles).
- Minimum 4 years of experience in AA/AAA video game development.
- Sensitivity for animation and tools, with understanding of their function and uses.
- Experience working in a real-time 3D video game engine.
- Proficiency in Maya, 3Dsmax, and Motion Builder.
- Experience in developing a variety of tools.
- Familiarity with complex rigging systems (templates, automation).
- Proficiency in scripting languages like Python or MEL.
Good to Have
- Knowledge of C++.
- Experience with MAXscript.
- Knowledge of Houdini software.

In a human-sized team, you will have the opportunity to take on responsibilities, work with great autonomy, in close collaboration with the Animation and Art departments, and contribute directly to the development of the studio's new narrative game.
The team
Under the supervision of Teppei, Animation Director, you will join a team composed of three Technical Animators and a Rigger/Skinner. You will collaborate closely with Animators, Character Artists, and Skinners/Riggers to design animation tools intended to facilitate their daily work.
Missions
- You will design and develop tools for character artists, riggers/skinners, and animators on the project.
- You will be the reference for your tools throughout production.
- You will document your tools: usage, workflow, best practices.
- You will provide support to character artists and animators for the implementation and optimization of the production pipeline.
- You will occasionally be responsible for rigging/skinning animatable elements (living beings, objects, vehicles).
Fundamentals for success in this role
- You have a minimum of 4 years of experience in AA/AAA video game development.
- You have a sensitivity for animation and tools, with an understanding of their functioning and uses.
- You have already worked in a real-time 3D video game engine.
- You master Maya, 3Dsmax, and Motion Builder.
- You have experience in developing a variety of tools.
- You are familiar with a complex rigging system (templates, automation).
- You master a scripting language, such as Python or MEL.
The little extras to be even more comfortable
- You have knowledge of C++.
- You have already used the MAXscript scripting language.
- You have knowledge of Houdini software.
