The primary responsibility of the Direct, Design Engineering is to formulate and communicate highly complex technical designs and cost estimates to both the business and customers. This role specifically relates to CyrusOne’s data center design and build process, as well as the strategic goals, objectives, decisions regarding partners and suppliers. The Director, Design Engineering further contributes to the organization by conducting strategic design and cost initiatives, providing technical guidance and insight to the Sales, Construction and Engineering teams in fulfilling requests related to strategy and direction.Skills And Competencies

- Sound understanding of Data Center design, engineering and construction principles and concepts. This goes beyond just the understanding of these concepts via business processes. It encompasses understanding of how markets influence business, what are the differentiating factors of the business, what and how values are created, and how strategy development may be supported.
- Ability to think about the business in a way that is abstracted from how business functions are potentially affected by data center design.
- Design thinking, which enables synthesizing of many ideas into big-picture view that shows the connection between business intention and business action.
- Being an agent for change, who uses technical architecture thinking to agitate and initiate action, challenge sales processes via new designs and technical solutions.
- Develop a broad and deep understanding of all company products, services and markets.
- Analyze the industry and market trends and determine new and potential business capabilities.
- Reviewing, analyzing, evaluating ideas, projects and opportunities to develop new sales proposals, technical solutions, and business models for the company.
- Participating in the planning and execution of Sales, Construction and Engineering initiatives that move ideas from concept to implementation.
- Working with technical and business teams to evaluate new and emerging technologies, vendors and business models.
- Conduct analysis to determine best path for solving business and sales problems/opportunities that may include design improvement, systems enhancement, and/or component procurement.
- Maintains work plans and documentation required to effectively manage deliverables and expectations consistent with business expectations.
- Apply and utilize appropriate methods to ensure results-oriented deliverables in a way that can be recreated and leveraged as intellectual capital.
- Ensure solutions developed are aligned to the company’s standards and principles, leverage common solutions and services, and meet financial targets (cost and benefits).
- Leads the effort to work with business leaders to identify business capability needs and prioritization.
- Provide architectural oversight of projects; ensure requirements are in alignment with business strategies and business architecture roadmap/framework.
- Take ownership and a ‘hands on’ approach to define and deliver a program of work to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of a core business process.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- At least 5 years work experience.
- Experience or demonstrated ability to provide customer-oriented support and consultative services to internal clients.
- Experience gathering and analyzing business requirements.
- Experience using model-based representations that can be adjusted as required to collect, aggregate or disaggregate complex and conflicting information about the business.
- Extensive experience planning and deploying both business and Construction initiatives.
- Experience with data center design, construction, operational technologies.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Personal integrity with uncompromising ethical standards.
- Exceptional communication skills and the ability to communicate appropriately at all levels of the organization; this includes written and verbal communications as well as visualizations.
- Strong situational analysis and decision-making abilities.
- Team player able to work effectively at all levels of an organization with the ability to influence others to move toward consensus.
- The ability to act as liaison conveying the information needs of the customer to an implementation team and to explain any limitations to the business.
- Ability to work as a member of a project team representing a particular system while focused on the architecture goals of the overall project.
- Vendor management, conflict resolution, facilitation, and negotiation skills.
- The ability to apply architectural principles to business solutions.
- May supervise non-exempt employees.
- May supervise contract employees (System Development Vendors and Consultants).
