About the job

At Kabam, we’re constantly raising the bar of excellence in free-to-play gaming. We hire for passion and diversity so that we can triumph in our collective skill. Our teams are made up of a fusion of personalities and interests bound together by a collaborative nature, fun-loving culture, and a drive to do what it takes to make great games. And this is where you come in…

Do you find yourself dissecting the different characters, abilities, units, weapons, cards, and enemies of the games you play? Whatever the game calls them, you can examine this toolset provided by the player, see how the parts fit together, find unique and interesting ways to combine them and understand how you could motivate players to attempt different gameplay based on them. You live both on the ground floor of understanding the player’s moment-by-moment gameplay, and at 5000ft predicting, tracking, and balancing a mature metagame with over 200 champions.

Sounds like a match? Our Vancouver studio is looking for a Senior RPG Champion Designer to join us on Marvel Contest of Champions!

As a Senior Champion Designer, you will:

    • Create captivating characters and content that players will encounter and interact with throughout the game, encouraging strategy and collection.
    • Design core RPG systems like character stats, RPG progression, skills, classes, and abilities, to create a deep and rewarding gameplay experience.
    • Establish a long-term strategic plan for RPG content design, live game management, and content releases.
    • Directly manage and mentor one or more RPG designers: guide career milestones, manage annual goal setting, and deliver performance reviews.
    • Partner in the roadmapping and planning of tasks and responsibilities within the RPG team.
    • Consider how a character will fit into an existing character ecosystem and design and build script mechanics for abilities.
    • Analyze gameplay data metrics used to understand player behavior (usage rates, pass rates, alliance trends, etc.)
    • Analyze player feedback, behavior, and engagement metrics to identify opportunities for improving the RPG experience.
    • Partner with the Content and RPG Leads in managing the daily operations and workflow of the RPG design team.
    • Share knowledge, experience, and best practices with junior team members and other disciplines to foster professional growth and development.

In order to be successful in this role, we're looking for:

    • 7+ years of experience in the video games industry
    • Experience managing game designers on a live-service title
    • Experience driving roadmapping and planning for live-service deliverables.
    • Experience designing playable characters (or abilities, or cards, or units, etc) on at least one shipped title
    • Curiosity and logical thinking
    • Familiarity with top mobile titles and current market and genre trends with focus on RPGs
    • Rock-solid organizational and project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities
    • Bonus if you have raw technical skills including Scripting experience

Excited by this opportunity? Kabam is dedicated to growing our diverse and inclusive workforce, so if your past experience doesn’t perfectly match the listed requirements we encourage you to apply anyways - you could be a great fit for this or other positions.

We invite you to apply now and start the conversation with us. Together, we can create and support some of the best games ever made and entertain the world!
