Job Summary

The Technical Director Characters is responsible for the technical quality and consistency of character modeling. They optimize team productivity by structuring the production pipeline efficiently to enrich the player experience. This involves understanding project needs, implementing appropriate tools and methods, and providing constant technical support to the modeling team for smooth data integration into the game engine.

Must Have

  • Design, document, and maintain workflows for character modeling, texturing, rigging, and integration.
  • Ensure asset performance (LOD, poly budgets, textures, shaders) respecting memory and CPU/GPU constraints.
  • Develop tools and scripts to improve production efficiency for artists.
  • Collaborate with animation, gameplay, engine, and lighting teams for technical compatibility.
  • Explore and integrate new technologies like 3D scans, grooming systems, and advanced shaders.
  • Write and maintain technical guides for internal and external teams.

Good to Have

  • Degree in 3D animation techniques for video games or equivalent training.
  • Strong command of game engines, PBR pipelines, Maya, ZBrush, Substance, and Houdini.
  • Good knowledge of scripting languages and shaders.
  • Ability to balance visual quality with technical constraints.
  • Aptitude for explaining technical concepts to non-technical teams.
  • Ability to mentor technical artists and character artists in best practices.
  • Proactive spirit and ability to anticipate technical challenges with innovative solutions.

The Technical Director Characters is responsible for the technical quality and consistency of character modeling. They optimize their team's productivity by effectively structuring the production pipeline, with the aim of enriching the player's experience. This involves a good understanding of project needs, the implementation of adapted tools and working methods, as well as constant technical support to the modeling team to ensure fluid data integration into the game engine.

  • Pipeline Definition: Design, document, and maintain workflows related to character modeling, texturing, rigging, and integration.
  • Technical Optimization: Guarantee the performance of assets (LOD, poly budgets, textures, shaders) while respecting memory and CPU/GPU constraints.
  • Support for Artistic Teams: Develop tools and scripts to improve production efficiency and facilitate artists' work.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with animation, gameplay, engine, and lighting teams to ensure technical compatibility.
  • Innovation: Explore and integrate new technologies (3D scans, grooming systems, advanced shaders).
  • Documentation: Write and maintain technical guides for internal and external teams.
