About the job

About Us

Afterburner Studios was formed in the summer of 2018 by three veteran game devs who were feeling burned out in more traditional development. Our debut title, Dreamscaper, an action roguelike with a lucid dreaming twist, launched in 2021. Since then it has gone on to reach over 600,000 players with an 89% positive rating on Steam.

Our next project is a larger, more ambitious title in the AA space, published by Focus Entertainment – a science fantasy 3D action / adventure blending classic elements with new twists. We’re looking to expand our team with motivated individuals that are excited to work in a small, fast-paced indie studio, in order to make a big impact on our next game.

The Job

We’re looking for a skilled UI Designer to work with us on a contract basis. This is a key role, as you will be responsible for the vast majority of UI in the game. You will collaborate closely with the team to understand requirements and come up with elegant user-centric solutions. The ideal candidate has both UX design sensibilities as well as strong artistic chops to drive the visual identity and creation of the UI. This is a non-technical role, but UE experience is always a plus.

We’re looking to form long-term relationships with contractors as we anticipate a multi-year project.

As our studio operates on core hours of 10AM to 2PM ET we will not accept candidates beyond UTC +2 or UTC -8.

Responsibilities

  • Work with key disciplines (art, design and engineering) to determine constraints and requirements for features.
  • Design clear and intuitive UI through a player-centric lens.
  • Collaborate closely with art to establish a strong visual identity for the UI.
  • Create a wide variety of screens, from frontend, to HUD to in-world interactions, all the way from concept to the final hand-off to engineering.
  • Present your design ideas and deliverables to stakeholders in order to get team buy-in.
  • Work closely with the team to ensure that your designs are properly implemented in game.

Requirements

  • A strong portfolio showcasing a variety of work, with a focus on visual styling.
  • Proven UI & UX experience within the games industry.
  • Strong proficiency with photoshop and illustrator.
  • Strong proficiency with UX design software of your choice, such as Sketch or Figma.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within a small, multidisciplinary team.
  • An openness to both giving and receiving feedback, in order to iterate quickly on solutions, identify problems, and ultimately achieve the best possible results.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and adaptability to changing requirements.
  • Highly self-motivated and proactive, you thrive while working without supervision.

Bonuses

  • Experience with Unreal Engine.
  • Motion design experience.
  • Work experience on Science Fiction / Science Fantasy projects.

Thanks for your interest, we look forward to connecting with you!
