Job Description

The Mechanical Technologist will develop, test, troubleshoot, evaluate, operate, and maintain experimental, research, and prototype equipment related to mechanical systems within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF & PS). Key responsibilities include fabricating, assembling, and disassembling mechanical components, operating related equipment, and providing technical support. The role also involves detailed assembly, maintenance of complex equipment, and applying knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to solve mechanical problems.
Must have:
  • U.S. citizenship for security clearance.
  • Associate’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience in mechanical fabricating and/or assembly.
  • Intermediate knowledge of electro-mechanical technology.
  • Experience with pressurized systems and leak testing.
  • Experience in safe work and business practices.
  • Effective written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Good to have:
  • Experience in 3D CAD, machining, and mechanical assembly.
  • Experience in operating precision systems/mechanisms.

Pay Range

$41.93 - $51.33 Hourly

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.  

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Mechanical Technologists. You will develop, test, troubleshoot, evaluate, operate, and maintain experimental, research, and prototype equipment associated with mechanical systems in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF & PS).  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role, you will

  • Fabricate, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex but extremely precise mechanical components and systems.
  • Operate related equipment, hand tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Provide general technical support, while working independently and using well understood methods, for a wide variety of activities, including vacuum, electrical, and plumbing/cooling installations.  
  • Perform  detailed assembly and maintenance of moderately complex equipment.
  • Prepare and work from instructional guides for assembling, repairing, calibrating, operating and maintaining equipment and systems.
  • Test, diagnose, maintain and repair moderately complex pressure systems, instrumentation, control, and test equipment.
  • Apply intermediate knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of moderately complex mechanical problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate’s degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing or related field, or equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Experience in mechanical fabricating and/or assembly.
  • Intermediate knowledge of electro-mechanical technology.
  • Experience working with pressurized systems and leak testing equipment.
  • Experience in mechanical design, fabrication, and opto-mechanical mechanisms.
  • Experience in safe work and business practices.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Effective written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in 3D CAD, machining, mechanical assembly and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience in the operation of precision systems/ mechanisms.

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
