The Senior Software Engineer will be part of the Azure Front Door WAF team, responsible for developing and operating the Web Application Firewall. This involves building robust services to safeguard the platform at different layers, protecting customer services using cutting-edge technologies. The role requires writing and operating highly scalable, lightweight, maintainable, efficient, and reliable code at terabits per second of traffic and millions of requests per second. Responsibilities include collaborating with stakeholders to define user requirements, developing design documents, implementing and optimizing code, debugging, and working as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) to monitor system health and resolve issues. The position requires expertise in various layers of the stack and collaboration with multiple teams. The work will focus on enhancing performance, quality, density, and reliability.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in CS or related field
  • 4+ years experience in software engineering
  • Proficiency in C, C++, C#, RUST, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • Experience with Linux
  • Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements
Good to have:
  • Experience with L7 data plane, distributed control plane, cloud networking services

Overview

With increased need to safeguard customers and Microsoft services, Azure Frontdoor WAF team is expanding to meet these growing needs. Azure Front Door delivers a geographically-distributed internet-facing set of services that provide acceleration, caching , protection and highly customizable traffic processing. As part of Azure Frontdoor WAF team delivers products to safeguard distributed services that can process requests at extremely low latency, in an high-scale manner, at terabits per second of traffic and millions of requests per second, with extreme reliability.


As a member of this team in Azure Front Door, you will be responsible for developing and operating the Web Application Firewall, building robust services for safeguarding the platform system at different system layers and protecting our customer services using the latest technologies across platforms . You will write and operate code that is super-scale but lightweight, maintainable, efficient and reliable. Your work will be critical in enhancing the performance, quality, density and reliability of the platform. This opportunity will allow you to work on various layers of stack, innovate and also a chance to work with multiple partner teams to deliver complex solutions. This position offers the flexibility to work from home or the office, depending on what best suits your needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, RUST, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience

Other Requirements:

 

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with working on linux
  • Experience delivering high quality implementations and designs while also working on testing and operational aspects of the service as well.
  • Experience in any of the following areas: L7 data plane, distributed control plane, cloud networking services
  • Distributed networking experience

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a scenario.
  • Drives identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
  • Creates, implements, optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive a workgroup's project plans, release plans, and work items.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.
  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
