Job Description

As the Chief of Staff for Machine Learning, you will partner closely with leaders in the ML organization to define business priorities and drive key initiatives. You will develop research roadmaps, lead ML strategy, drive planning processes, and help create alignment across teams. You will be responsible for weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual planning processes, as well as facilitating discussions and documenting action items. You will also proactively identify risks and opportunities to shape products and improve internal operations. The ideal candidate is highly organized, analytical, and possesses strong communication skills. The role requires a focus on customer relationships, outcomes, and an empathetic interpersonal style.

Job Details

As the leading data and evaluation partner for frontier AI companies, Scale is dedicated to advancing the progress of generative AI, with a focus around frontier evaluations, the science of data around posttraining, agentic applications, trustworthy agents oversight frameworks and beyond. 

In this high impact role, you will partner closely with our leaders in the ML organization, develop research roadmaps, drive planning processes, and lead ML strategy. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual who is able to combine meticulous planning & organization, analytical rigor, an obsessive focus on customer relationships and outcomes, and an empathetic interpersonal style. You have a demonstrated ability to lead AI projects and initiatives, establish credibility with internal and customer C-Suite stakeholders, and are comfortable rolling up your sleeves to tackle a variety of challenges. You will:

  • Partner with the Head of ML and other senior leaders to define business priorities, drive execution of key initiatives, and create alignment between and within teams.
  • Help develop overall business unit strategy, business development priorities, and internal operating models.
  • Drive weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual planning processes for the ML business unit.
  • Perform analyses and provide recommendations to facilitate effective business unit decision making.
  • Own key operational rhythms / processes (weekly leadership meetings, All Hands, OKR reviews, team offsites), including preparing the agenda, facilitating the discussions, documenting notes / action items, and closing out follow ups.
  • Act as a thought partner to ML business unit leadership, proactively identifying risks and opportunities to shape our products and improve internal operations.

Ideally you'd have:

  • Exceptional executive communication skills with the ability to distill complex ideas into clear, concise insights—and deliver them through engaging presentations and slide decks.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude; comfortable reviewing technical research (e.g., Scale AI Research) and grasping high-level concepts quickly.
  • Highly organized with a planning-focused mindset. Strong prioritization and multitasking capabilities in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
  • A strong orientation towards outcomes and data-driven decision making, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves to get the job done.
  • Proven track record of building relationships and influencing across teams without direct authority.

Nice to haves:

  • Degree or professional experience in computer science or other STEM fields, or hands-on experience with building software or machine learning systems.
  • Enterprise and/or AI product management experience.

Compensation packages at Scale for eligible roles include base salary, equity, and benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position, determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, interview performance, and relevant education or training. Scale employees in eligible roles are also granted equity based compensation, subject to Board of Director approval. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process, and confirm whether the hired role will be eligible for equity grant. You’ll also receive benefits including, but not limited to: Comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage, retirement benefits, a learning and development stipend, and generous PTO. The base salary range for this full-time position in the location of San Francisco is:

$204,000 - $255,000 USD
