Job Description

The Payroll Risk & Compliance Expert will be a subject matter expert for German payroll compliance, advising various teams. They will conduct payroll reviews, identify discrepancies, and ensure compliance with German wage tax and social security regulations. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining documentation, collaborating with Payroll Operations, monitoring regulatory changes, and training team members. The role involves reporting to the Manager of GP Strategy & Compliance and contributing to the global payroll compliance strategy. This position requires strong knowledge of German payroll legislation and experience in payroll operations.
Must have:
  • In-depth knowledge of German payroll legislation
  • Experience in German payroll operations
  • Understanding of payroll-related regulatory reporting
  • Familiarity with German payroll software
  • Strong written and spoken communication in English and German
Good to have:
  • Experience with payroll software in Austria and Switzerland
  • Exposure to local authority audits or investigations

The position

This is an exciting time to join Remote and make a personal difference in the global employment space as a Payroll Country expert (or Regional) , joining our Payroll Risk and Compliance team.

Our ideal candidate will have experience in regional/global payroll operations, including a deep understanding of wage tax laws and social security regulations in at least one country. Proven track record in identifying payroll compliance risks and implementing controls.

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of German payroll legislation, including wage tax, social security, and labor law compliance.
  • Proven experience in German payroll operations, ideally in a global payroll environment or in a payroll audit and compliance role.
  • Strong understanding of payroll-related regulatory reporting and working with local authorities.
  • Familiarity with common German payroll software (e.g., DATEV, SAP, or comparable systems).
  • Experience with payroll software or systems in Austria and Switzerland is a plus.
  • Exposure to local authority audits or investigations.
  • Ability to analyze complex payroll issues and recommend practical, compliant solutions.
  • High attention to detail, accountability, and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, international environment and collaborating across functions.
  • Strong written and spoken communication in both English and German.
  • Experience working asynchronously and/or remotely is a bonus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as Remote’s subject matter expert for German payroll compliance, advising Product, Operations, and Legal teams as needed.
  • Conduct payroll reviews to ensure accuracy and full compliance with German wage tax and social security regulations.
  • Identify discrepancies, propose corrective actions, and lead follow-up to resolution.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation on audits, processes, and local compliance controls.
  • Collaborate closely with Payroll Operations to embed compliance into all stages of the payroll process.
  • Monitor regulatory changes in Germany, interpret their impact, and guide implementation internally.
  • Support and train payroll team members on German compliance matters.
  • Report to the Manager of GP Strategy & Compliance and partner with stakeholders across Payroll, Legal, and Tax.
  • Contribute to global payroll compliance strategy and drive process improvement initiatives.

The base salary range for this full-time position is $122,200 USD - $137,500 USD. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location, and our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay for the successful candidate in this role is dependent upon many factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, work experience, relevant training, business needs, and market demands. The base salary range may be subject to change.
