As a Senior Research Scientist - Face Perception, you will join a generative AI startup revolutionizing filmmaking. You will report to the VP of Research, leading a team for face detection, recognition, and occlusion detection. Responsibilities include leading research, producing publications for top-tier conferences, mentoring a research team, and managing multiple projects globally. This role requires excellent time-management, knowledge of immersive production trends, and strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams in the US and UK.
Must have:
  • MSC or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Vision, or related field
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing teams of 3+ scientists/engineers
  • 5+ years of research experience with publications in top-tier CV and Graphics venues
  • Experience working in collaborative research teams.
  • Background in linear algebra, numerical optimization, and statistical analysis
  • Experience with Deep Learning based models for scene understanding
  • Experience in identification, localization, tracking, imaging, occlusion detection
  • Proficiency with Python and DL frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
Good to have:
  • Experience managing and scaling teams of Scientists and interns
  • Experience managing career development for team members
  • Experience developing (multi-modal) 2D/3D techniques
  • Knowledge in 3D reconstruction and segmentation
  • Experience with automated benchmarking and metrics methodologies

What we are looking for:

As the Senior Research Scientist - Face Perception, you will be joining an innovative generative AI startup that is changing the future of filmmaking. The Senior Research Scientist - Face Perception will report to the VP of Research, working closely with Science, VFX, Production, and Product teams. This person will be responsible for leading a team of Research Scientist and Research Engineers for face detection and recognition, landmarks and segmentation, and occlusion detection. This team is impacting the delivery of localization and foreign language dubbing solutions across feature films, episodic series, and commercial content.


The Senior Research Scientist - Face Perception must be a forward-thinking and solutions-oriented researcher and will be responsible for the innovation and development of generative AI editing solutions for our global clients. Critical to this role is having the ability to lead and produce Publications, accepted at top-tier conferences like CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, and SIGGRAPH, as well as lead and mentor their research team of scientists, engineers, and Interns. Excellent time-management skills, deep knowledge of the latest trends in immersive production, and experience in managing multiple projects in high volume on a global scale are imperative. 


As a Scientist must have clear, concise, and constant communication which is paramount to the success of our production ability.  This leader must be able to work effectively and efficiently with our cross-functional teams in both the US and UK locations. This position reports to the VP of Research, and works closely with other key production executives, creatives, and Science Leaders.


Qualifications
  • Completed MSC (PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Visual Computing, or research industry experience with Deep Learning and Visual Computing
  • 3+ Years of leadership, managing teams of 3+ Scientists/Engineers.
  • 5+ Research experience with a strong publication record in top-tier CV and Graphics venues, such as CVPR and Siggraph
  • Experience working in collaborative teams comprising researchers, applied and data scientists, and platform developers
  • Ability to conduct proactive and independent research beyond expectations
  • Remarkable background in linear algebra, numerical optimization, and statistical analysis
  • Demonstrable experience with Deep Learning based models for scene understanding
  • Familiarity with modern 2D and 3D Vision, including but not limited to identification, localization, tracking, imaging, occlusion detection, and segmentation of objects, faces, or scenes.
  • Experience with self-supervised and few-shot deep learning techniques.
  • Proficiency with Python and DL frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch (preferred)
  • Previous experience with cloud platforms, such as AWS, GCP, or Azure


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing and scaling teams of Scientists and interns
  • Experience managing career development for team members
  • Demonstrable experience developing (multi-modal) 2D/3D techniques for object/scene detection, occlusion, identification, tracking, reconstruction, and/or segmentation
  • Knowledge in 3D reconstruction and segmentation with multi-view and video dataKnowledge in speaker detection, talking head detection, facial identification, speaker diarisation
  • Experience with automated benchmarking and metrics methodologies
  • Familiarity with CNN, GAN architectures, Transformer, and Diffusion Models
  • Experience with GPU tools and libraries, such as CUDA, CuPy, Jax, etc.


Interview Process:

At Flawless, our team and interview process want to help you show your best self. We’ll dive into past projects and simulate working together.  Our interview process is four rounds with some casual Zoom (or in-person) coffee in between to get to know each other: 


- Recruiting Screen: 30-45 minute call with our recruiting team (We want to discuss your background, interests and motivations as well as the practical details and make sure that Flawless would be a good fit for you)


- Hiring Manager Screen: 45-60 minute zoom interview - you will meet with our VP of Research to discuss your technical expertise.


- Coding Interview: 60 min live coding test. This will be a technical paired-programming task with one of our science team. This is designed to be an open/pairing type exercise to assess your ability to parse simple requirements, translate those into code, and demonstrate your fluency with hands on coding.


- Presentation: 30 Minutes Virtual - Present a talk for and overall summary - breadth of problems you have worked on, depth on a multimodal problem you have had hands on contributions, and future vision, and your approach/vision to problems you would apply for Flawless. This will include a 10 Minute Q&A


- Domain Depth AI/ML: 60 virtual OR onsite (dependent on location of candidate) interview where you will meet 1-2 members of the Applied/Research science teams, through a screen share format talking through experience in deep learning architecture, and machine learning principles.  


- Behavioral: 45 Minute virtual OR onsite Interview (dependent on location of candidate) - You will meet with leaders and discuss how you work in startup environments, and communicate and partner with other teams in ever evolving situations. This is where we evaluate communicate, partnerships, and working in ambiguity.


Your recruiter will be your main point of contact and prepare you for interviews. You’ll meet 4 to 6 people from across the business. (We make sure that you have time in each interview to ask them questions). If we don’t give an offer, we’ll provide feedback!
