About the job

THE ROLE:
ProbablyMonsters is looking for an Associate Animator to become part of the core development team for an unannounced studio located in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX.
You will join a team that believes:
  • Leadership is demonstrated by empowering and guiding employees to reach their full potential while working towards a clear goal.
  • Making games is a team sport best done through planning, iteration, and collaboration.
  • Predictability and creativity are not mutually exclusive.
  • Providing opportunities to the next generation of developers is critical to the long-term health of the studio and the industry in general.

You have dedicated yourself to learning everything you can about the craft of making games. All you need is the opportunity to shine. Our studio is committed to providing opportunities for people like you. We believe veteran talent has an obligation to usher in the next generation of developers. Our studio is a place where passion, excitement and fresh ideas combine with experience and knowledge to form a creative energy that we believe is truly unique.

Location(s) and Travel:
We are a Hybrid Studio. We believe that the office and home have their place in today’s work environment. Employees must be able to access the office located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There will be a minimal amount of travel in this role. (Less than 10%)

WHO YOU ARE:
  • You do not need experience shipping games! But you need to prove that you have a desire to do so. You will need a portfolio of work demonstrating your creativity as an animator. That could be in the form of videos, animated shorts, character animations, a website, something else entirely, or even a combination of various media types - the choice is yours.
  • You might know exactly what you want to do as a animator. Maybe not. But you understand the functional differences between the distinct types of animation disciplines and can communicate what you currently think your specialty is in, or what you think you want it to be in if you are not specialized yet.
  • You have a powerful desire to grow and receive feedback. It can be tough to receive critical feedback on something you have poured your passion into but understand that the feedback loop is a tool toward making better animators, learning, and self-growth, and as such, you are also respectful and professional when providing your own feedback to others.
  • You are open-minded and enjoy being challenged with what you might consider good enough. You believe the “gold standard” is just a temporary example until something better comes along, and a better solution can come from anyone, at any time, and not just from the team of designers.
  • You are relentless in your pursuit of making engaging, creative animations for everyone who sees your work but will temper it with realistic expectations on work-life balance as part of a team that depends on one another to set boundaries and quality working conditions.
  • You have an insatiable curiosity. You understand that learning is a life-long process and are open to understanding new perspectives and ways to create animations.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
  • Work with the senior artists and the art director to prototype and animate characters, environments, and other elements for a brand-new game.
  • Collaborate with other associate animators, designers, engineers, and artists to bring your animations to life.
  • Be a key part of the animation feedback loop, providing new perspectives, suggestions, and critical analysis of work to help your peers achieve their best results.
  • Likewise, you will take feedback, iterate, and absorb critical analysis of your own work to achieve your own best results.
  • Contribute to defining the animation team’s processes and participate in defining, and evolving, the studio’s core values.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • You want to be an animator – character, environmental, technical, something else. You may not be sure which one, specifically, but you are certain that animating for games is what you want to do.
  • You must have a portfolio and submit it alongside your application.
  • A college degree is not necessary, but it is still valuable as it can show your willingness to both start and complete a long and challenging task.
  • It would be a bonus if you have experimented with Unreal Engine, Blender, or Maya and understand animation workflows or have experimented with another animation tool and understand its processes.
  • You are a strong written and verbal communicator.
  • Another (big) bonus: You have made an animated short, a demo reel, a final year project at school, or something that shows you understand the complex nature of making animations for video games.
  • You are self-driven and motivated to find answers to questions that may not have been asked yet.
  • Time management may not yet be a skill that you have mastered, but you are motivated to learn it.
  • Must already live in the vicinity of Dallas, TX, or be willing to relocate.
