The Staff Software Engineer, Metrics and Business Intelligence role at Google involves providing technical leadership on high-impact projects, coaching a distributed team, and ensuring alignment across teams. Responsibilities include managing project priorities, designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining software solutions. The Metrics team defines and executes key performance indicators for data-driven decision-making on frameworks and infrastructure serving Google's products (Search, Workspace, Gmail, etc.). The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in software development, data structures, algorithms, testing, software design, architecture, SQL, and data analytics. Experience with data warehousing and ETL processes is also crucial.
Must have:
  • 8+ years software development experience
  • Data structures/algorithms expertise
  • 5+ years testing & launching software
  • 5+ years SQL & data analytics experience
  • Software design and architecture skills
  • Technical leadership and project management
Good to have:
  • Master's/PhD in relevant field
  • Experience with cross-functional projects
  • Data warehousing/BI solution design
  • ETL development (structured/unstructured data)
  • Relational database expertise (queries, schema design)

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 5 years of experience with SQL and data analytics.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in an organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
  • Experience in designing and delivering data warehousing/business intelligence/reporting solutions and working with data manipulation using SQL.
  • Experience in SQL and relational databases including queries, database definition, and schema design.
  • Experience designing data models and data warehouses, writing and maintaining ETLs which operate on structured and unstructured sources.

We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.
