Disney Publishing Worldwide seeks a part-time Copy Editor to copyedit and proofread fiction and nonfiction children's books. Responsibilities include copyediting manuscripts of varying lengths, ensuring grammar, spelling, style, and consistency; proofreading at all stages; and updating house style guides. The ideal candidate has 3+ years of experience, preferably in children's books, is detail-oriented, meets deadlines, and works well independently. Project-based work, with no guaranteed hours. Pay is $32/hour in New York.

Disney Publishing Worldwide is seeking a Copy Editor to copyedit and proofread fiction and nonfiction titles for all ages on a project-by-project basis. The successful candidate will be thorough, self-motivated, and will possess excellent follow-up skills.

You will report to the Copy Chief.

Responsibilities/You Will:

  • Copyedits short manuscripts (picture books, chapter books, and short stories) and longer manuscripts (middle grade and young adult novels) to ensure sense, continuity, quality of grammar, spelling, and style, and accuracy and consistency of text and art

  • Performs proofreading at all book stages to check that changes and corrections have been completed as requested

  • Crafts and updates house style guides for authors and staff

  • Please note that this position does not come with guaranteed hours; work is assigned on a project-by-project basis, as needed

Basic Qualifications/You Have:

  • 3 years’ experience as a copy editor, preferably with some experience in children’s and/or young adult books

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently

  • College-level understanding of literature, grammar, style, and spelling

  • Meticulous attention to detail

  • Capable of working very tight deadlines, sometimes on short notice

  • Ability to work with digital documents, using Word and Adobe software

  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition and comfort working with a house style and individual series guidelines and nomenclature

  • Availability on weekdays, during business hours

Preferred Qualifications

  • Copy editing and proofreading fiction

  • Spanish-language editing skills strongly preferred

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

The pay rate for this role in New York is $32.00 per hour.
