Job Description

Bad Robot Games seeks an experienced Lead VFX Artist to spearhead outsourced VFX efforts for a new, unannounced IP. Responsibilities include creating and implementing particle effects using 2D/3D elements, driving external VFX development, placing VFX across game areas (environment, gameplay, cinematics), fixing bugs, ensuring performance optimization, collaborating with the Art Director on VFX direction, playtesting, prototyping VFX concepts, and problem-solving technical and artistic challenges. The role also involves managing VFX team members, maintaining style guides, and ensuring the team's success. The ideal candidate will possess a strong portfolio demonstrating real-time game VFX in Unreal Engine 5, and mastery of software such as Houdini, Substance, EmberGen, Photoshop, After Effects, and Maya.
Must have:
  • Shipped 2+ AAA real-time game projects in Unreal Engine
  • Mastery of Unreal Engine 5's Niagara, Material Editor, Blueprints
  • Proficiency in Houdini, Substance, EmberGen, Photoshop, After Effects, Maya
  • Experience managing VFX artists
  • Excellent artistic and technical skills
Good to have:
  • Experience with extended VFX systems (destruction, simulation, dynamics)
  • Proven track record of dependability and high-quality work

Bad Robot Games is looking for an experienced and talented Lead VFX artist to drive our Outsourcing VFX efforts for our new, unannounced IP. The ideal candidate has a great eye for real-time game VFX and team-leading skills such as mentoring, work planning, and providing feedback and direction along with implementation. This candidate would have a strong mix of artistic and technical skills and loves innovating and creating memorable player experiences.

This role requires a portfolio submission demonstrating real-time game vfx and will primarily be focused on supporting our outsourcing efforts within VFX.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates, designs, and implements particle effects using both static and animating 2D/3D elements
  • Helps drive external/outsourced VFX development and works with the internal team for implementation
  • Places VFX across all areas of the game, including environmental VFX, gameplay VFX, and cinematics all while collaborating to ensure that VFX are implemented appropriately in the game engine
  • Fixes VFX-related bugs, and ensures that VFX assets are performant and optimized
  • Works with the Art Director and other creative leads to drive and maintain VFX direction for the game
  • Playtest regularly and understand each facet of the game closely
  • Prototypes VFX concepts for gameplay as well as problem solves technical and artistic challenges collaboratively, assisting production across a variety of disciplines.
  • Manages VFX team members and maintains style guides, documentation, and other resources

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Shipped at least 2 real-time game projects in Unreal at AAA quality and complexity
  • Has a keen eye for realism
  • Has a strong understanding of Unreal 5’s Niagara, Material Editor and Blueprints and a mastery of relevant software packages such as Houdini, Substance, EmberGen, Photoshop, After Effects, and Maya
  • In-depth knowledge of technology, terminology, and techniques of game art development, including an awareness of design and performance considerations
  • Is highly collaborative within and beyond the art team, and is able to identify gaps in communication and process
  • Has experience managing VFX artists and being accountable for their growth, communicating feedback, addressing performance, and advocating for their success
  • All of our roles require up to 10% air travel. Examples include Studio/Team Offsites, Team/Studio Events, etc

Annual Salary Range: $168,500 - $172,500

Our ranges are based on California market rate regardless of work location in the US.
