Sports Reporter
Full-Time Regular (37.5 hrs/wk)

DESCRIPTION:

Looking for a dynamic, career-oriented Reporter/Staff Writer to join our award-winning Sports Team.
Sports at this 7-day publication focuses on daily coverage of area high school programs with additional coverage for an NCAA Division 3 college and an SEC school. The ideal candidate will have a desire to tell the story in multiple mediums that include visual and digital components, as well as personal stories that provide context to the game and season. Reporters who thrive on writing only gamers need not apply.

JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Work collaboratively with other sports reporters and editors. Write features, previews, game stories and analysis for multiple sports.
  • Contribute to the newsrooms’ efforts to effectively cover and inform the community.
  • The ideal candidate will be a strong writer who demonstrates exceptional interviewing and organizational skills — and who exhibits a tenacity and a genuine curiosity.
  • This is a full-time position based on nighttime coverage with some weekend assignments on a seasonal schedule.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, REQUIREMENTS:

  • Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with the company's core values;
  • Take effective notes and be able to draft an organized article from those notes;
  • An excellent grasp of interviewing and writing techniques and a demonstrated knowledge of how multimedia enhances reporting;
  • Initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with sources in the community;
  • Able to accept instruction and editing direction from editors;
  • Strong eye for details;
  • Working level understanding and utilization of AP Style and inverse pyramid structure
  • Reliable transportation and smartphone

PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • Experience writing enterprise and long-form content, as well as telling personal stories;
  • Experience covering news on social media platforms;
  • Experience with photography and/or video

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
  • Familiarity with AP style is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Google suite of apps and products

EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
