Tarsier Studios is seeking a creative and technically-minded Technical Artist to join their team. The role involves designing and implementing stylized shaders and real-time VFX in Unreal Engine, building procedural tools and generating content using Houdini, collaborating with artists and programmers, and optimizing assets for performance. Must have:
  • Experience with Unreal Engine's material editor, Niagara, and shader pipeline
  • Proficient in Houdini for procedural content creation and tool development
  • Good eye for visual design, motion, and artistic detail in VFX and shaders
  • Familiarity with Python, VEX, or other scripting languages
Good to have:
  • Experience with rigging and animation workflows
  • Background in performance profiling and optimization
  • Familiarity with game content pipelines (Maya, Blender, Substance, etc.)

About the Role:
Tarsier Studios is looking for a creative and technically-minded Technical Artist to join our team. Your focus will be on using Unreal Engine and Houdini to craft stunning shaders, dynamic visual effects, and procedural tools that elevate the look and feel of our worlds.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design and implement stylized shaders and real-time VFX in Unreal Engine.
  • Use Houdini to build procedural tools and generate complex, high-quality content efficiently.
  • Collaborate with artists and programmers to solve technical challenges and support efficient workflows.
  • Optimize assets and effects for performance across platforms.
  • Help push the visual bar by staying current with the latest tech and trends.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Strong experience with Unreal Engine's material editor, Niagara, and shader pipeline.
  • Proficient in Houdini for procedural content creation and tool development.
  • Good eye for visual design, motion, and artistic detail in VFX and shaders.
  • Familiarity with Python, VEX, or other scripting languages.
  • A collaborative spirit and a love for solving creative tech challenges.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a similar role

Bonus Skills:

  • Experience with rigging and animation workflows.
  • Background in performance profiling and optimization.
  • Familiarity with game content pipelines (Maya, Blender, Substance, etc.).

Applicants must hold a Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship or valid work permit for Sweden as we are unfortunately unable to support relocation from outside the EU at the moment.

This position is onsite at the office in Malmö, and will start with a probationary period.

About The Company

Currently employing around 60 people, Tarsier Studios is an independent game development studio based in Malmö, Sweden. Having worked with Sony and Media Molecule on various projects including LittleBigPlanet PS Vita and Tearaway Unfolded, the last few years has seen Tarsier make the transition to full independence. 


2017 saw the release of both Little Nightmares and Statik, Tarsier’s first two original titles. Little Nightmares II was released February 11th, 2021. With both games wildly different from each other in both style and gameplay, the answer to ‘what makes a Tarsier game?’ remains refreshingly unknown and hugely exciting. 


The unveiling of The City of Metronome at E3 2005 put Tarsier Studios on the map as a developer with a unique vision, and the talent to make that vision a reality.
