Location: Liverpool or Remote (UK)


We're looking for a Senior Lighting Artist to work with our Art and Production team on a new PC title with a talented development team.


Responsibilities

  • Develop the lighting, colour and mood, and transitions for environments and characters with guidance from Directors and Leads, the Art team, and Design.
  • Create dynamic and static lighting setups for environments, characters, and cinematics.
  • Balance aesthetic appeal with performance optimization, ensuring that lighting solutions run efficiently on target platforms.
  • Work closely with the Art Director, Environment Artists, and Level Designers to achieve the desired look and feel.
  • Collaborate with the technical art team to define and implement shaders, post-process effects, and other lighting-related tools.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior lighting artists, fostering a collaborative and creative work environment.
  • Solve complex technical challenges related to lighting and ensure seamless integration of lighting with other systems (e.g., weather, time of day).
  • Contribute to the visual narrative by using light to emphasize mood, highlight key gameplay moments, and guide the player's eye.
  • Stay current with industry trends and lighting techniques, incorporating new methods to enhance the game's visual quality.
  • Review and implement feedback from Directors.

Job requirements

Required Experience

  • Experience of using 3rd party engines such as Unreal Engine
  • Excellent understanding of colour theory, composition, and the principles of lighting, to deliver a quality realistic style for compelling game environments and in-game cinematics.
  • Strong artistic skills to interpret concept art and colour keys to recreate the mood and atmosphere in a game environment.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with artists, designers, coders, tech artists and art directors.
  • Knowledge of art pipelines in game development studios.
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills, time management, and organisational skills, with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Desired Experience

  • Strong understanding of exposure, direct/indirect light, fog, post processing, and the relation between shaders/materials, albedo, and lighting.
  • Excellent competency in industry standard DCC Software utilising Physically-based HDR Lighting and Global Illumination.
  • Experience with scripting and shader creation is a plus.
  • Experience on AAA console games.
  • General understanding of colour grading with proficiency in industry standard software such as Nuke, Fusion, DaVinci Resolve

Important:

The interview process for the Senior Lighting Artist role is made up of 2 stages:

  • First interview (45 – 60 minutes) – An interview to discuss your experience and working history relating to the position with members of our Art team. In return, we will provide a full overview of the role, life at the studio as well as answer any questions you may have.
  • Final interview (30 minutes) – A final Interview with our Studio Head and Studio Production Director. This will be a chance for you to get to know the Senior Management team and all the things that make Lucid, Lucid! You will have a lot of opportunities to ask any questions about the studio and Culture.
