The Role: Our Asian equities research group is seeking a Japanese speaking equity research associate based in Singapore. The candidate must be bilingual with strong Japanese and English language skills. The associate will support equity analysts mainly in the consumer, industrials and technology sectors to create valuation models, write research reports, and assist with other ad hoc research tasks. The Associate will be expected to progress to an Analyst role performing fundamental analysis within our well-defined research framework, writing research reports and determining fair values on a select group of stocks. They will also be expected to gain skills in effectively pitching investment ideas in accordance with Morningstar’s investment methodology.
Responsibilities
- Assist analysts to produce value-added research that encompasses both the determination of a fair value estimate and a thorough examination of the company’s competitive position.
- Help analysts produce research output that includes the creation of charts and tables.
- Monitor industry information and share updates with the relevant analysts.
- Support team activities and group publications as needed including the quarterly equity outlook.
Requirements
- Be able to communicate well in English and Japanese with strong English writing skills.
- Minimum of bachelor’s degree while a CFA designation, or progress towards it, is considered favorably. The candidate should be able to think critically, independently and with attention to detail and the facts.
- Some working experience as an associate analyst in the sell-side, buy-side or independent equity research fraternity is an advantage but not required.
- We place importance on demonstrated logical thinking backed up by an awareness of how to interpret and use data.
- We will consider individuals with no specific equity research experience but candidates should be comfortable and used to playing around with financial models, have read company financial reports, and possess knowledge of equity analysis.
- Work well within a team and be capable of respectfully accepting and providing constructive feedback.
- Make timely decisions under demanding deadlines, sometimes with incomplete information.
- Have an interest in developing financial modeling skills together with knowledge of business valuation techniques.
- Be passionate about looking at stocks from a long term, valuation-based perspective.
