Job Description

As the Head of Environments and Generalists, you will develop and support consistent workflows, ensuring the correct tools and technology are being used to deliver high-quality work. You will define workflows, maximize efficiency, and set standards for the EnvGen Pipeline. You will collaborate with other department heads, communicate on behalf of the EnvGen team, and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency. This role also involves managing the EnvGen team, conducting reviews, and providing mentorship. The job description emphasizes the ability to manage international communication and contribute to the division of work between locations.
Must have:
  • Deep understanding of environment creation in VFX for film and television.
  • At least 10 years of experience in the VFX industry.
  • Significant supervision and/or management experience.
  • Previous experience in line management.
  • Extensive knowledge of tools and software like Houdini, Nuke, etc.
  • Superb problem-solving skills and ability to propose ideas.
  • Excellent artistic eye for CG environment design.
  • Advanced understanding of 3D, 2.5D, and Matte Painting techniques.
  • Experienced in project management and prioritizing tasks.
  • Experienced in coaching and mentoring artists.
  • Excellent overall technical skills.
  • Talent to influence and build strong working relations.
  • Ability to understand the needs of a production-driven environment.
Good to have:
  • Previous knowledge of the DNEG pipeline.
  • Experience in Python and general programming.
  • Background in traditional art and/or concept design.
  • Previous experience working in or with development teams.

As our Head of Environments and Generalists, you will develop and support consistent workflows in your department, ensuring the right tools and technology are being used to delivery a variety of work to the highest standard, in an effective manner. You will be accountable and responsible for helping define these workflows and approach in order to maximise efficiency of the show teams. You will help designing and setting standards for the EnvGen Pipeline in order for your team to create the highest standard of work in the most optimised manner. You will engage in the creative process with positive & supportive attitude and can demonstrate an excellent aesthetic eye and ability to anticipate potential problems.
 
Working alongside the other Heads of Department at DNEG, you will be responsible for communicating on behalf of the EnvGen team, being the point of contact for collaboration for all shows and implementing strategies to improve operational efficiency on an on-going basis. A lot of this will consist of workflows in the handing off of assets between departments.
 
DNEG is a truly international company working with one pipeline and one vision to provide the very best visual effects and managing international communication across departments and shows is key to this role.  Working closely with your Head of EnvGen counterparts in our other studios, you’ll contribute to planning the division of work between locations to maximize resources and productivity. 
 
The line management of your EnvGen team, including Supervisors, is a core part of this role. You will be accountable for conducting probationary reviews, annual appraisals including salary discussions, performance management and succession planning alongside hiring for your team when required. You’ll be responsible for developing your team and fulfilling their potential providing mentorship and guidance. 
 
Must Have
  •  Deep understanding of the creation of Environments within visual effects for high-end film and television. 
  •  At least 10 years experience in the VFX industry.
  •  Significant supervision and/or management experience in the VFX industry.
  •  Previous experience in line management.
  •  Must have extensive knowledge of tools and software such as Houdini, Nuke, Maya, Photoshop, Speedtree, Substance Suite, Mari, and other peripheral software used in the creation of environments.
  •  Demonstrates superb problem-solving skills and takes initiative to propose ideas and suggestions.
  •  Excellent artistic eye for the design of CG environments to push the levels of photorealism across all of our environment work.
  •  Advanced understanding of 3D, 2.5D and Matte Painting techniques for efficient workflows.
  •  Experienced in project management, able to prioritise tasks & time efficiently and can give accurate time estimates on work.
  •  Experienced in coaching & mentoring artists in new techniques and efficiencies.
  •  Excellent overall technical skills.
  •  Talent to influence and build strong working relations within an organisation
  •  Ability to understand the needs and demands of a production driven environment
 
Nice to Have
  •  Previous knowledge of the DNEG pipeline.
  •  Experience in Python and general programming.
  •  Background in traditional art, and/or experience doing concept design.
  •  Previous experience working in or with development teams.
