Microsoft seeks a Principal Product Designer for its Consumer Ads team. This role demands a visionary leader with 6+ years of experience in product or service design, proficiency in UX/UI, visual design, motion design, and storytelling across multiple platforms (Copilot, Windows, Bing, Outlook, etc.). The designer will lead cross-functional collaboration, drive design excellence, and create engaging ad experiences for billions of users. Responsibilities include end-to-end design lifecycle management, compelling communication, building design culture, and prototyping. The ideal candidate will leverage AI, reinvent monetization, and align design with business and user needs.

Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Principal Product Designer to join our Consumer Ads team to drive high-impact creative experiences across our ecosystem. Between Copilot, Windows, Bing, Outlook, Microsoft Casual Gaming, and more, the opportunities are endless. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of user experience, visual design, branding, motion design, and storytelling across multiple platforms. The right candidate has a passion for creating engaging and rewarding user interactions, the ability to lead and inspire design, and independently drive creative ideas to implementation rapidly.

As a visionary Principal Product Designer, you will elevate the craft by inspiring, defining, articulating, and delivering elegant and simplified solutions to our most complex challenges. Leading by example, you will collaborate with partners and executive stakeholders to drive exceptional design outcomes, aligning design solutions with business, technical, and user requirements. You will have the opportunity creatively put AI to the test, and reinvent monetization experiences like never before, for billions of users to not only value, but love.

The Microsoft AI Design & Research team is a creative community of designers and researchers on a mission to create and deliver holistic customer experiences while imagining the future of web experiences. While our preferred location for this position is Redmond, WA, we are open to candidates based anywhere in the United States.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 8+ years experience working in product or service design
    • OR Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 6+ years experience working in product or service design
    • OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems)
Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years experience working in product or service design
  • Demonstrated sense of Interaction Design attuned to the fundamentals of user experience, including accessibility and inclusive design
  • Strong Visual Design skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation / storytelling skills, with the ability to energize teams and advocate for your ideas
  • Experience designing in Figma
  • Motion Design experience
  • Experience with digital marketing and advertising
  • Experience building and maintaining a Design System

Product Design IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Cross-Functional Collaboration: Facilitate effective collaboration with creative team members, product managers, developers, and executive stakeholders to define, iterate, and implement new and existing ad experiences, ensuring alignment with business, technical, and user requirements. 
  • Design Excellence: Understand the user, advertiser, and business needs to design quality, cohesive, revenue generating experiences that delight.
  • Strategic Product Design and Prototyping: Drive the end-to-end experience design lifecycle from conception to delivery, including schedule alignment, dependency tracking, research backing, expansive prototyping initiatives, and ensuring designs meet user needs and company standards through detailed interaction models and user experience enhancements.
  • Compelling Communication and Storytelling: Develop and communicate persuasive product stories to diverse audiences, including senior leadership and key stakeholders, to inspire excitement and garner support. Influence product strategy and design decisions through effective storytelling and presentation of design concepts.
  • Build Design Culture: Contribute to broader Microsoft AI team culture (e.g., mentorship, onboarding, team morale, employee resources groups/clubs) and lead by example for all designers.
  • Adaptability: Thrive in a fast-paced, design-driven environment.
