Product ManagerSN Engineering Platform [Engineering Enablement]

Building services that enable others

It is home to an array of respected and trusted brands and imprints, with more than 170 years of combined history behind them, providing quality content through a range of innovative products and services. The company has around 10,000 staff in over 50 countries.

We’re looking for a Product Manager who will drive the evolution and adoption of our Engineering Platform across Springer Nature.

About us: Engineering Enablement

The Engineering Enablement (EE) department consists of around 65 people, spread over teams that closely collaborate to fulfil our mission. In Springer Nature Technology (SNT) we serve different core expertise: PaaS, Databases, Observability and Cloud- and Release Engineering. You will join a multidisciplinary team with different nationalities, backgrounds and experience levels. We are a very distributed department but sometimes we travel to work with each other in person. We are based around the globe with main locations in London, Dordrecht, Berlin and  Lisbon

About The Job

We are looking for a Product Manager to drive the evolution of our Engineering Platform. This role will enable teams across Springer Nature to build and scale applications efficiently while reducing operational complexity. It will sit at the intersection of developer experience, platform strategy, and cloud governance, ensuring that our platform aligns with business needs and engineering best practices.

You will work closely with EE's platform engineering teams on the establishment of the platform's roadmap, covering the needs of developers and core stakeholder groups (out of some: security, data product teams and AI capability functions). While you push our Platform-First-Strategy, you prioritise Platform as a Service (PaaS), drive adoption of best-in-class developer tools, and continuously improve the platform’s usability, performance, and security.

You will have a good understanding of developer workflows, CI/CD, Runtime and scaling, and platform engineering. You should be passionate about streamlining development processes, reducing operational burden, and driving a culture of automation and self-service.

You will be working with colleagues from different backgrounds and experience levels. All team members collaborate to deliver solutions that best satisfy the needs of our business, and we are working to create a culture that encourages new ideas and innovation, but within the boundaries of the technologies that suits Springer Nature's vision best.

If you enjoy working at the intersection of technology, product, and developer experience, and want to have a tangible impact on how engineering teams build and ship software, this role is for you.

About You

  • You are able to quickly gain context of your area and how it fits together into the wider business context.

  • You are proactive, self-driven, make yourself useful, pull information and don't wait to be asked, seek advice when unsure.

  • You like working in a collaborative team where there is collective responsibility.

  • You can demonstrate experience in working successfully with teams in an agile manner.

  • You can demonstrate your experience in facilitating groups to achieve defined goals and outcomes using various facilitation tools and techniques.

  • You will have excellent communication skills and articulate concepts and ideas from technical and functional business perspectives.

  • You can use available data to inform decisions and build better products.

  • You proactively identify pain points and openly address any forms of gaps.

  • You can demonstrate the outstanding analytical ability to solve complex problems.

  • You have experience working in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

  • You use your drive, creativity and initiative to move the team forward.

  • You have experience in driving continuous improvement and innovation across teams.

  • You can collaborate with multiple teams across different locations to deliver solutions.

  • You are intellectually curious and motivated - constantly looking for more context.

  • You disdain routine and get involved with a wide variety of different activities.

You are a friendly team member who is modest and humble, open to learn from anyone regardless of age, gender, race, role or experience. You value social interactions and are able to self-reflect by asking questions. You favour building relationships over building systems. Continuously looking for improvement, but not chasing perfection and accepting failure. You have a strong preference of working together and sharing knowledge as opposed to quickly getting things done alone. We care more about these qualities than technical knowledge.

We highly value potential, not just experience, so don't feel you have to tick all the boxes -- we’re looking forward to your application!

Responsibilities

Product Strategy & Vision

  • Define and execute the Platform-First strategy, ensuring seamless adoption of our Engineering Platform across the organization.

  • Align the Engineering Platform roadmap with broader cloud strategy goals.

  • Drive a multi-cloud approach with a focus on abstraction, portability, and open standards to reduce vendor lock-in.

  • Collaborate with engineering and leadership to define KPIs and measure the success of platform adoption.

User Experience & Developer Enablement

Work closely with engineering teams and stakeholders to understand pain points and enhance developer experience through self-service tools and automation.

  • Ensure the platform provides standardized, secure, and scalable (cloud) services that reduce cognitive load for developers.

  • Promote a culture of "secure by design" by integrating governance and compliance into the Engineering Platform and services.

Execution & Delivery

  • Prioritize features and initiatives using a data-driven approach, balancing strategic impact with engineering needs.

  • Collaborate with platform engineers, solution architects, and security teams to define and govern cloud service consumption.

  • Establish clear guidelines for service utilization, ensuring alignment with our governance framework.
