Job Description

The Spanner Analytics Federation team at Google seeks a Software Engineer III to unify transactional and analytical workloads by combining BigQuery and Spanner. This role involves developing and architecting distributed systems, working with data structures and algorithms, and ensuring the performance and scalability of systems like Spanner Data Boost and Federated Queries. Responsibilities include writing and reviewing code, participating in design reviews, contributing to documentation, and resolving system issues. The ideal candidate has experience with C++, distributed databases, performance analysis, and debugging, and experience with transaction processing systems (OLTP) or large-scale analytics (OLAP) is a plus.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development in C++, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree in an industry setting.
  • 2 years of experience with data structures or algorithms in either an
    academic or industry setting.
  • Experience in concurrency, multithreading, and synchronization.
  • Experience architecting and developing distributed systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields.
  • Experience with distributed databases and database internals.
  • Experience with performance analysis and debugging, improving performance of distributed systems, and systems debugging.
  • Experience in code and system health, diagnosis and resolution, and software test engineering.
  • Experience building transaction processing systems (OLTP) or larger scale analytics (OLAP).
  • Experience building data warehousing systems (e.g., Spark, BigQuery).

The Spanner Analytics Federation team’s mission is to unify transactional and analytical workloads by combining the power of BigQuery and Spanner. This will allow real-time insights and serve through a unified offering. The team works with internal and external customers to ensure capabilities such as Spanner Data Boost, Spanner Federated Queries, and BigQuery Export to Spanner (Reverse ETL) meet their needs.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $136,000-$200,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Write product or system development code.
  • Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide on available technologies.
  • Review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
  • Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.
  • Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
