DTC’s Operational Excellence teams are responsible for driving a culture of continuous improvement across the WBD Engineering community to ensure smooth efficient operation and the highest customer satisfaction. We are the team responsible for identifying and optimizing the video quality of experience (QoE) for all video streaming products and platforms at Warner Bros. Discovery. Our objective is to build engineering solutions that enable us to quickly and efficiently distinguish signal from noise, capture trending watch experience issues in VOD and LIVE streaming solutions, and drive prioritization to restore the customer experience as soon as possible with minimal handoffs.
We are looking for a data-centric, customer-obsessed, highly motivated analytical performer with a strong passion for leading continuous operational improvements in the WBD Video Streaming platforms. As a Sr. Staff Analytics Developer on the Operational Excellence team, you will collaborate with multiple departments, including our site reliability engineers, QoE Analysts, core media engineering, and customer experience teams to deliver streaming video that exceeds customer expectations. You are the CEO of Video Quality Experience, safeguarding and overseeing the quality of the viewer’s watch experience. Our customers are at the center of how we shape our products and we are the guardians of our customer experience.
Roles and responsibilities
As the lead on the Video QoE Reliability Engineering team, you will improve root cause analysis, instrumentation, and reporting of Video Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics working jointly with the player and backend service teams.
You are a champion for data-driven decisions on how to improve and evolve video streaming performance for our customers with a strong sense of ownership for the WBD Streaming Technology platforms you support.
Design, implement and deliver complex, high quality data models to produce ongoing operational reporting, program reporting, and executive-level dashboards.
Be passionate about deep data analysis and identify the bread crumb trail from user interaction within the app to video events to data attributes within the schema.
Use data to bring actionable insights, assess impact and help drive prioritization of video quality and performance issue fixes by playback, CDN, and platform engineering teams.
Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets using statistical techniques and build reports and dashboards tailored to the needs of engineering teams and senior leadership.
Ability to replicate issues observed within our telemetry tools to disambiguate signal from noise and make recommendations to enhance metric instrumentation, error code classifications to help build a highly reliable video performance and monitoring system.
Conduct industry benchmarking, create internal SLA targets, support your recommendations to influence business decisions and drive alignment across multiple departments.
Ensure video quality data governance and data accuracy by inspecting, cleansing and performing quality checks.
Ideate, innovate and create complex software roadmaps that will impact the entire streaming industry.
Describe highly technical concepts to non-technical audiences in a way they can understand.
Performing ad hoc analyses and data extraction requests.
Hold yourself, your team, and the department to high standards while maintaining friendly, respectful relationships
The Essentials
BS degree in Computer Science, or a related field with 12+ years of relevant experience.
7+ years of experience in the areas of Data Science and Analytics preferably in the Video Streaming technology space.
Experience with analytics engines and monitoring tools like Prometheus, OpenSearch for data analysis using query languages such as SQL, PromQL.
Proficient with complex SQL (multi joins, subqueries, unions) and creation of database objects (tables, views, materialized views, etc.)
Solid understanding of statistical inference and applying statistical rigor to analyses.
Expert at one or more reporting / visualization tools (Looker, Power BI, Tableau etc.)
Ability to think critically and a master at analyzing data trends for operational risks and efficiencies.
Extremely detail-oriented with excellent organizational and presentation skills.
Creative problem-solver, independently driven with high sense of ownership, urgency, and proven ability to lead and influence.
Must have the ability to produce deliverables according to schedule, ability to adapt to changes in requirements and priorities, be a self-starter, and show initiative.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
Have led the design, implementation, and delivery of large engineering projects that interacted with multiple teams
You are highly adaptable to changing business need and are able to drive change across multiple disciplines within the engineering and operations world.
High EQ and professional maturity, with demonstrated ability to engage at an executive level.
Experience collaborating in hybrid remote/in-office teams across multiple regions and time zones.
Experience with media player technologies (e.g. ExoPlayer, AVFoundation, HTML5 video) and knowledge of media encoding schemes (AAC, AVC, HEVC) and streaming protocols (http, HLS, DASH) is highly desirable.
