As a Senior Staff Controls Engineer at Wisk, you will be part of the Control Laws Development Team, designing, implementing, and analyzing control algorithms, state estimation methods, and self-flying autonomous software. Your responsibilities include developing flight software models, supporting various teams within the Aircraft IPT, improving control law algorithms based on flight test data, coordinating analysis activities for software certification, developing new GNC tools using MATLAB/Simulink, and contributing to software development and verification activities. You will also support SIL/HIL and flight test operations, run closed-loop simulations, and become familiar with the vehicle's avionics and analysis tools.
Must have:
  • 12+ years of experience in aeronautical/aerospace or relevant engineering field.
  • Strong knowledge of control theory and experience on a GNC team.
  • Hands-on experience with control laws algorithms, MATLAB & Simulink skills.
  • Deep knowledge of fixed-wing and rotorcraft aerodynamics and flight dynamics.
  • Strong simulation background for testing control laws in a 6DOF environment.
  • Experience leading teams and achieving control laws certification.
  • Familiarity with Subpart B certification rules and means of compliance.
  • Experience designing robust control and allocation algorithms
  • Experience analyzing state estimation and sensor outputs.
  • Experience writing software requirements for controls algorithms.
  • Using simulation for aiding certification of control systems

We are looking for a Senior Staff Controls Engineer to join our Control Laws Development Team Team. The goal of this team at Wisk is to design, implement and analyze controls algorithms, state estimation methods, and self-flying autonomous software.  You will model and create software that runs on prototype and full scale airplanes, as well as ultimately supporting the flight tests of those new algorithms. Additionally, you will be part of the Aircraft IPT organization, which is responsible for developing and delivering a safe autonomous flight vehicle by following standard aviation certification processes, performing rigorous testing and utilizing formal controls analysis techniques.

This is a hybrid work opportunity. At Wisk, this means working onsite at one of our office locations (Mountain View, CA, or Montreal, Canada) 3 days per week, with flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the days. 

What you will do:

    • You will take part in developing flight software models and improving existing models within the Control Laws Development Team.
    • As part of the Aircraft IPT, you will support such groups as the Aerodynamics, Structures, Stability&Control, and Vehicle Management Software Teams.
    • You will support problem solving activities following flight tests on our Subscale prototype vehicle, in which you will improve control law algorithms after reviewing the flight test data.
    • You will help coordinate analysis activities to support verification of design requirements for satisfying software certification objectives.
    • You will take part in developing new GNC tools using software best practices in MATLAB/Simulink
    • In some areas, you will be working closely with the Model-Based Design Team, contributing to software development and verification activities for developing high-integrity software. 
    • As a Senior Staff Controls Engineer, you will help develop new GNC tools using software best practices in MATLAB&Simulink.
    • You will support SIL/HIL and flight test operations activities in debugging anomalies and issues.
    • You will run closed-loop simulations within the flight physics simulation engine, and improve software design models after analyzing the logged results.
    • You will obtain a high level of familiarity with our vehicle’s avionics, software architecture, mode & controller algorithms, and the team’s analysis tools.

Requirements:

    • M.S. or PhD. in Aeronautical/Aerospace or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering with at least 12 years of industry experience
    • You have previously worked on a GNC team and have strong knowledge control theory.  
    • You have hands-on experience creating control laws algorithms, and have developed strong MATLAB programming & Simulink modeling skills.
    • You have a deep and applied knowledge of fixed wing and rotorcraft aerodynamics and aircraft flight dynamics.
    • You have a strong simulation background for testing your control laws in a 6DOF environment.
    • You have led teams that achieved certification of their control laws.
    • You are familiar with Subpart B certification rules and means of compliance.
    • You have experience in the following areas:
    • -Designing robust control and allocation algorithms
    • -Analyzing state estimation and sensor outputs (accelerometers, gyros, magnetometer, GPS, pressure transducers, etc.)
    • -Writing software requirements for controls algorithms
    • -Using simulation for aiding certification of control systems
$214,100 - $251,800 a year

Pay Range the Company expects to pay: $214,100 - $251,800 per year - The starting base salary within this range for this role varies based on factors such as your geographical location, and your relevant job-related experience that is consistent with a business necessity.
