Job Description

As a Software Engineering Manager II at Google's Corp Eng, you'll lead and mentor a team of engineers, setting priorities aligned with broader organizational goals. Responsibilities include managing project goals, contributing to product strategy, and ensuring engineers optimize their code. You'll design and guide systems, review code, and provide feedback. The role requires strong technical skills in multiple programming languages (Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript) and experience in technical and people management. You'll develop mid-term technical visions, adapt roadmaps to future needs, and ensure best practices are followed. The ideal candidate has a proven track record in leading complex projects within a matrixed organization.

Must have:

5+ years software development experience
3+ years technical leadership
2+ years people management
Bachelor's degree or equivalent
Strong communication & collaboration skills
System design & code review expertise

Good to have:

Master's/PhD in CS or related field
Experience in a complex, matrixed organization

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent practical experience.
5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing strategic projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.

Responsibilities

Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals. Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
Develop the mid-term technical vision and roadmap within the scope of your (often multiple) team(s). Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
Design, guide and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
